over eating; throwing up, Learning Curve?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 3/3. I am learning what I can and can’t eat..I seem to tolerate most foods now.

Over the last week, it appears I am getting full quickly to the point that I feel uncomfortable and have a strong urge to throw up…the food just comes up…Sometimes it is due to eating out and not eating mindfully, but other times I am not able to track where I went wrong…..I am also terrified that I may be stretching my stomach and that I will return to eating larger portions and all this work would have been for nothing. Does anyone know if this is true? That my stomach is being streatched......Any suggestions on avoiding throwing up?

Yes, you are in a learning curve. Most of us VSGs had to learn how to eat properly. Many good suggestions.

Slow down. Chew everything 20 times (yes count) before you swallow. Then put down your fork or spoon for a moment.

Measure everything you eat. If you are eating too much, that is not good for new sleeve. You should have a diet guide with amount you can eat per meal. If not, search internet for Cornell VSG diet or Hopkins VSG diet or a number of other good ones out there to reference. Recommend you always follows your surgeons diet plan though.

Good luck Desert Flower!

Totally agree with iegal. I was an overeater/throw upper initially too. There is usually a "sign" of fullness before you actually get the sensation of feeling full -- mine is nausea. First sign of nausea, I STOP -- if I go further, I WILL throw up. My second sign is a hiccup. I know a lot of people have a hiccup. And I can't stress how much you have to slow down when eating. and measuring your food -- I still can only eat about 4 oz. of food at a time (that's weighed food, not measured in a cup). That's it. So I make sure that I serve myself less than a cup of food or 4 oz. of food or less. If I want more, then I can get more. AND I make sure that I take really tiny bites. Kind of like the size you might cut up for a toddler. That seems to help.

Hope this helps! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
