SO much fluid retention after surgery!

Recommended Posts

Hi all. First of all, thanks to everyone who has posted on this website. I've been lurking for months and gotten great tips and information!

I had sleeve surgery on May 11th. Turns out my spleen was attached to my stomach, and I bled & bled & bled. I ended up in the hospital 2 extra nights, got 4 units of blood, plus a unit each of plasma and platelets. When I got home, I actually weighed MORE than I did before I started the 2-week preop diet! While I've lost almost 10 pounds of Fluid, I'm still puffy and obviously retaining a good bit still. Has anyone else had complications like this or come home to massive fluid retention? If so, how long did it seem to take to get rid of all the fluid?

Thanks so much for your input!

OMG you poor thing! :unsure:That must have been a shocker for the dr to see your spleen and stomach attached. I've never heard of that happening. Hope you're swelling goes down soon for ya.

How scary and frustrating for you! I had not complications, but did gain 10 pounds from the IV. I remember reading on here someone who had gained over 20 from the IV. It will come off, just drink as much as you can, and keep to the plan. It will get better.

Wow- that's harsh!

Odd as it seems- the more you drink the faster it will flush out so drink drink drink!

Thank you all so much for your encouraging words! I'm trying to push fluids as much as possible, and I think it's definitely helping. Apparently fewer than 10% of people have attached stomachs & spleens, so it was just one of those freaky things. Am definitely feeling better everyday.

I didn't have any issues with my surgery, it went smoothly, but I did gain like 10 lbs. In 3 days it was gone. Don't worry about it too much, it is just from all of the IV fluids they give you, it has a lot of sodium in it. You will get rid of it. Just drink your Water and it will flush itself out.

I lost mine in like 3 days plus another 3 lbs. You will too!

Good luck!!

Kelly :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
