FMLA for surgery in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Hi! So, this isn't really an insurance question but I figured this would be the most appropriate place to post it. :)

Does anyone know if the Family Medical Leave Act applies for surgeries done in Mexico? I'd like to take sick time for this but wasn't sure if I would be able to as I wouldn't be seeing a US doctor.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer!

Ann

I had lap band July 2007 in Mexico & was able to take FMLA. I had no issues with my employer accepting the form the doctor had filled out.

Yes, your surgery is considered treatment for a "serious health condition" and you can't be denied FMLA if a doctor authorizes your paperwork. The law doesn't designate whether treatment takes place in or out of the U.S.. What matters is whether the company you work for is in or out of the U.S. You are allowed up to 12 weeks off with guaranteed job security. I think most of us took off 2-4 weeks from work. Good luck on your surgery!

This is great info in or out of the US - I wasn't sure if this was what I needed to do but I will definitely be applying!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
