Bob here from Lansing and new here but I had my Lapband done at the Barix Clinic in Ypsilanti with Dr. Jamokay Taylor and we are going to remove the band after two years and perform the VGS as soon as my insurance approval is obtained. I did pretty well with the lapband as I dropped 83 lbs but then stalled, gained 25 back and we couldn't get the band any tigher and I still NEVER had any restriction. Very frustrating. They had to use a 14 cc LAPBAND on me and it just never tightened me down. So, this is the reason for the revision. Dr. Taylor is very good and thorough and I have tremendous confidence in his abilities.

Been awhile since anyone posted here. I also participated in the Sparrow Weight Management program. I also did three tours of Optifast through them - lost 50-70 lbs each time only to regain it all and more back.

This time I looked into the bariatric program thinking there was no way I would follow through. However, I'm SO glad I did!!! Best thing I've ever done for myself. Did some research into Dr. Mindy Lane and the results came back very favorably. She was head-hunted to become the director of the program for Sparrow hospital and had glowing reviews. So imagine my disappointment when I was assigned to the other surgeon on staff for bariatric?

However, I couldn't be more thrilled with my surgeon. His name is Dr. Kosisochi Obinwanne. He's got great bedside manner. Made me feel I wasn't just a number or that next patient on the list. He was funny, approachable and listened to my questions. Just wanted to throw that out there for anyone considering Sparrow. So far, my experience over the years has been one to recommend.

I was sleeved through Sparrow Weight Management with Dr. Mindy Lane as my surgeon. I will always give high recommendations to her. I love her, she is tough but she wants to make sure you are ready for this change. And also the program is great too. Her PA Amanda is awesome and also Dr. Obinwanne, he did my gull bladder surgery to remove it. The team is very awesome. I will be a year out of surgery in November and have zero regrets. The weight management part the team is very welcoming and will answer your questions and help you move along to go see the surgeons.

I am leaving Sparrow's program - the final straw was Richard Lieske the so-called psychologist. My husband mentioned he had reservations about surgery as he worries about me, and Richard called him ignorant and told me I MUST bring another support person or else the surgeon would never clear me with that attitude. Um... this was supposed to be a visit to also help the support person understand.

Richard was so full of himself, even going to the extent of telling me I am getting the sleeve. He is NOT the surgeon. He nagged his 400+ pound brother in Texas to do surgery, and even though the man has lost 80 lbs without WLS, Richard said he is still demanding he have the surgery because it's "his right to tell him what to do." I asked Richard why he can't support his brother on his awesome success, and he replied that he knows his "brother will fail." The man is on a power trip.

Also since they changed office locations, the staff is even more rushed. Twice I've been ushered back to a room with an exam table, and I have a rickety chair to pull up to the table on which to take notes. Not professional at all. Sparrow's program is an assembly line of people getting the sleeve, no matter what their personal history and beliefs are...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
