Fruits & Vegetables......

Recommended Posts

I was afraid to eat veggies and fruit till about 6 months out. They kinda made me feel sick, but I missed them terribly. I am now over a year out, and about 9 months from surgery I started eating salads with just romaine and tomatoes. I now can put any raw veggies in it and not have any problems. I HAVE to have fruit and veggies or I get so constipated that I have actually injured myself. (not going into detail as it is too much tmi) but I now consume at least one salad with 1/2 to 1/4 cup servings of at least 5 different veggies, eat an orange and apple everday, and mix my Protein shake with blueberries in the morning. I only have one Protein Shake a day, but since I lost a LOT of hair, I try to get in at least 75 grams of Protein a day. I just have to make sure that I also get in my veggies. I still have problems with grains. They get stuck, and I end up throwing up most of the time. Just not worth it to me.

As time goes by, things will get easier. I CAN eat oatmeal in the morning if I decide to mix my vanilla Protein powder in as my milk, and it doesn't make me sick. I love oatmeal, and was told by my pre-op nutritionist that I would never be able to eat it ever again. If I use the shake as the milk, I'm not getting the sugar from the milk.

I don't believe in that Protein first rule. I know if I eat Protein first, I'll be too full to eat any veggies. So I will usually eat some veggies first. I get plenty of protein through my Protein drinks so I don't worry about it.

I snack on fruit. I like to cut up an apple and put Peanut Butter on it. I eat which ever fruit is in season. In the summer, its blueberries and strawberries.

I also drink Miralax every day because I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I just read someones post earlier who mentioned miracle noodles they are carb and calorie free I checked out website and I definetly want to order some, Someone else said they are the same as the noodles in the TOFU and meatless section I think there made up of mushrooms but they are white. Check out the website, Miraclenoodle.com

I haven't heard of Dreamfields Pasta? What is that...is it low carb by any chance? I tried the Mission whole wheat carb balance tortillas this week (small -fajita size) and they have changed my life! I made a mini-pizza on one (Eggface recipe) and grilled cheese sandwiches! Yummy and I love finding a lower carb bread I could eat.

:D Now if I can find a low carb Pasta my life will be perfect! :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
