Pork rinds... Good or bad snack????

Recommended Posts

I try to eat 3 ounces a day. 240 calories and 27 grams of Protein. Most days I can only do 2 ounces. An ounce is roughly 23 pieces. Each ounce has 80 calories and 9 grams of Protein. Great snack to munch on through out the day. :)

I LOVE Pork rinds. I've been eating them since I was a child. I take them to the movies to eat instead of munching on popcorn. If you have never tried them before I would suggest buying a bag from Walmart. They cost about a dollar.

I'm a month and a half out of surgery and I think my surgeon would go nuts if I told him I ate Pork rinds. I've eaten them pre-surgery time to time but never post. I stick straight to the diet and eat only the foods given to me on the approved list. I'm just now getting into the "moist meats." I think chips and stuff like that are so high in sodium and personally I wouldn't want to go back to eating things that really don't serve my body any nutritional purpose. I can get Protein from a source with way less sodium then pork rinds. I personally don't think it's a smart idea. It's like resorting back to pre-surgery eating habits. I'm trying to use my surgery as a tool for a change of lifestyle and don't want to go back to all those old Snacks. I don't think I'd even be able to swallow one down even if i chewed it up to crumbs anyways.

I also would like to know at what stage of food can Pork rinds be added. I have some microwaveable ones that have only 2 grams of fat and 9 grams of Protein in a 14 gram (1/2 cup) serving. I know that I am not yet at the food stage for them but wonder where they fit in and I can enjoy them again.

Ummmm .... maybe it's just me. But Pork rinds as a post-bariatric surgery snack? Danger Will Robinson.

They're simply salty, deep fried pig skins. I grew up eating them, so I know they're delicious in that "I don't care how much salt and fat I'm eating right now, I'm in fried pig skin heaven" kind of way. A one-ounce serving (1. ounce.) has 150 calories, a whopping 9 grams of fat, and 515 grams of sodium.

Let's keep each other honest, guys. We had bariatric surgery for a reason, and it wasn't so we could eat unhealthy foods and "undo" the good that the surgery brings us. I'm not trying to offend anyone, and if I have, I apologize. But there are a ton of healthy ways to add taste, crunch, and Protein to our post-surgical fare without going down the road that got us here in the first place.

Tread lightly, for here be dragons.

Perhaps those who believe that pork rinds are always bad for you should do a little research. The fat content in pork rinds varies greatly.

The brand I use is microwaveable, no added sodium, and 2, yes TWO grams of fat in a 1/2 cup serving. No carbs, and 9 grams of Protein in a 1/2 cup serving. The bagged type can have anywhere from 5-9 grams of fat per serving because they are FRIED. Stick to the type you microwave and you get a healthy high protein, low fat snack, much better for you than many other Snacks that have more fat and less protein or are loaded with carbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
