What is everyone doing post-op in terms of Vitamins? I am scheduled for surgery on the 27th and am trying to get as much in place as possible. I've read people saying that they had to wait two weeks to start taking vitamins, other people are taking them 5 days out? Can anyone tell me what you took and how soon? Also HOW, did you have to crush them up, get liquid ones, etc? There is so much conflicting info on this topic, any guidance would be much appreciated!!

I'm glad you asked this. I was given chewables meant for people who'd had WLS and a prescription to get chewable pre-natal. I can't find them anywhere because mine are not to have Iron in them and all of the pharmacies I've called only carry them with Iron.

The chewables I was given are horrid. Taste horrid. The only thing that gives me acid reflux and have twice induced vomiting. Needless to say, I am not taking them.

I go to the doc on Wednesday and am going to ask him but I was wondering if this stomach is okay now to take a solid pill. I don't want one that's the size of a horse pill like a lot of the OTC vitimans are but I need more than the one a day that I am currently taking.

If anyone knows anything or has any brand suggestions, I would appreciate it too.

My program has us take Bariatric Advantage brand chewable and the Multi Vitamin is the one with ADEK in the name. We also have to take Calcium, B12 and Iron I believe. I haven't started them as I am preop. They have a kit set for our program on their website so we just have to select the flavor or the type of calcium. We can take capsules after 3 months I believe.

I started having hair and nail problems a few months before surgery, so I was very anxious to restart my supplements. At about 2 weeks post-op, I started taking liquid supps...a multi, B12/B6/folate combo and D3, all sublingual (SL). I am now able to take all of my other meds without crushing, but I will continue the liquid supps because no matter what is said, we have lost a large part of out digestive tract and our absorption is somewhat impaired. The liquids are easily absorbed both in our mouths and guts.

I use Starr Walker vitamins. They are a little expensive, but fortunately I can afford them now. Also unlike many other vitamins, they don't taste bad at all. I am sure they will not appeal to some, but they will not gag a maggot like many others I have tasted!! I purchase them at Doorway to Health, but I don't know where all of their locations are. They have a website, www.starrwalker.com, but I have not been on it because they are available just a couple of miles from my house.

These nutritients are absolutely necessary to maintaining our health now that we are sleeved, so please find something you can use consistently. I believe our health depends on it. Hope this helps.

I started all vits and supplements five days out but it took awhile for me to find the ones I liked. One Centrum chewable in the am--they are orange-flavored but chalky so I chew half, wash it down with Water, and repeat with the other half. I take 2400 mgs. of B-12 on Mon, Wed, and Fri. and 1000mg of Vit D. everyday. 1200 mgs. of calcium citrate liquid everyday, too. My 3 month labs were excellent.

How far apart do you space your Calcium for maximum absorption?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
