Milk after surgery??

Recommended Posts

I have a question..... After surgery, when you can start drinking milk, does it matter the type? Other than calories, is there a reason not to drink Whole milk? I ask cause we usually milk our cow and drink the milk. I pull off the cream to make butter though so it isn't full strength. I plan to ask at my nutrition class but that isn't until June!

Thanks!

Leslie

Any kind of milk was fine for me during thin liquids and beyond. I just have been drinking non-fat for so long I kept using it. I put half-and-half in my coffee, though.

I think you can have it whenever you're comfortable because it's a liquid.

However, some people do develop an intolerance to diary products so be careful!

The lowest fat milk I can routinely get here is like 2.7% fat, so I have been using that all along, no problems.

I could only have milk after my third day home per surgeon requirement. And I switched to skim milk months before surgery and I have no problem with it

My aftercare instructions said I could have milk the day I came home from surgery. I drink skim milk and absolutely love it (always have, ever since I was a kid). Let me just tell you how relieved I was to see that I had not developed the dreaded lactose intolerance that I see some people talking about on here... :)

I was a big diary user before, after i had lactose intolerance, but glad to say about 10 weeks out, I can now use dairy again.

hey - i was told by my doc to only use skim milk - he said full fat was too heavy for the liquids only stage.

hope that helps....

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
