Liquid Protein Supplement-Post op

Recommended Posts

Now that I have a date, and after doing all the research...I still have some questions.

My NUT said to take the first month post-op, a Liquid Protein supplement. That way I could do 2 TP and be done.

My question is...how much can you swallow at a time right after surgery. Will I be able to swallow a tablespoon at once? If so, can I swallow the next tablespoon right away? How did you measure?

Also, she recommended the one that is 15 grams per 2TP. So, I am assuming that I need to take this 4 times a day, right?

Proteinex or Pro-Stat 101...which is better?

I am making myself nervous and want to be prepared.

Thanks!

I have not had my sleeve yet so I can't answer all of your questions. If nobody else chimes in to answer your questions you could call your nut and she will answer them for you.

I would try different Protein drinks until you find one that you like, everyone has different tastes.

Try not to be nervous, I know it's hard not to the closer the date comes!:)

How much you can swallow right after surgery depends on the swelling in your stomach. You can swallow a tablespoon but will it go down? I dunno. Some people have a lot of swelling and need to take tiny sips with a few seconds in between. Other people can swallow almost normally soon after surgery. If your Protein supplement is 2 tablespoons/day and you can't swallow a whole tablespoon at once, take a teaspoon six times a day.

As for what Protein supplement to take, I can't help you, I drank shakes.

I am 5 days post op today and can just take normal sips today. Before today, I had been drinking 1 oz cups of Water in about 10 minutes. I didn't realize the drinking would be so hard and time consuming. This being said, you would be able to drink the 1 TBSP but it would probably take you several minutes and tiny, tiny, sips.

Also five days out and just getting better at swallowing. I think it takes about four sips to drink a tablespoon- I have been setting my phone alarm for every 15 minutes and using the 30ml/2T /1ounce in little cups I got from the hospital to measure what I drink - I make sure I drink two every alarm.

The other thing is that whatever you drink after has to be palatable to you. The Protein drinks I loved before surgery made me vomit. So planning on this supplement might be risky! I have found some things that work, fortunately.

You wont really know until you are post op- and in addition I think you will need to find some Protein supplements that can work long after that to help you keep your protein up for the long haul.

I could barely take sips without pain in the first 5 days post op. I used Isopure clear Protein Drink. It took me a whole day to get one small bottle down

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
