TMI, but I need to know. So I'm 8 days post-op and started light bleeding. It is almost like the beginning of a period, but I'm not due for one for another 2 weeks. Then the part that really freaked me out is blood in my stool. It isn't a lot, but is definitely there.

I've had no problems in terms of energy, keeping liquids and food down (egg, cheese, other soft Proteins - I'm definitely on one of the less strict diets in terms of being able to eat soft foods post op 6 days. I was sent home with those blood thinner shots and just took my last one this morning.

I have of course called my dr. and am laying here ( self-prescribed bed rest) waiting to hear back.

The only thing I can think of was overdoing the walking at 5 days post-op when I walked costco for 2.5 hours (dumb I know). Since then my belly has felt a little crampy and I had some pain in my drain site when waking up and getting out of bed the next day.

Thoughts??? Did this happen to anyone else?

I think most of the ladies had a period shortly after surgery, whether it was the right time or not. I started on day 4 after surgery and that was early for me. The blood in the stool is what would worry me. My first question would be: are you straining a lot when you go? That can cause damage to the anal tissue and you might see trace blood from that. Definitely call the doc to make sure there is no other blood from the stomach that is making it's way through.

same with what Lara said. I started my period 2 days after surgery. surgery can bring on a period.

blood in stool is scary. glad you called your doc and I hope that everything turns out well for you and it's nothing major. sometimes it can be from strain or a tear near anus. much luck to you

If the blood was red and not black then it's fairly low, probably in your rectum. It would be black if it was any higher up so I don't think it's that dangerous

Any rectal bleeding is worrisome, especially if you have been on anticoagulants. It may self correct when the blood thinners are out of your system, but you should definitely see your doctor just to be sure...Kathe

Just talked to nurse and she said the darker colored stool blood is normal. 2min. Before she called, I started a full on period so that makes me feel better. Still going to lie low today. So used to taking ibuprofen for period cramps but going to have to use Tylenol.

Thanks all!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
