Looking for a Maine Mentor

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of being evaluated for VSG at EMMC with Dr. Toder. I don't have a very supportive group of friends to help with this process. I'm looking for a mentor who can answer questions, etc....

Hi Cindi,

My name is Brenda, I too live in Maine, the big town of Oakland. I am at about the half way point to surgery. I have Aetna and they require a few extra steps. So I can't even see the surgeon until after Aug. 11th. I am having my surgery done in Bangor at EMMC. Not sure which surgeon as of yet. We can discuss who has the most experience and how she does it. I would be happy to follow along with you and compare. I've done a lot of research and read anything I can. I believe I have this process down in order to get good results.

I am old so that helps .. LOL

If you're intersted in an older partner, I'm here.. You may be further along in the process so you may be able to help me?

:-) Have a great day!

I'm in NH (seacoast area) and had my surgery on March 24, 2011. I'd be happy to help in any way that I can!!! I'm 10 weeks post op today and am down a total of 44 pounds! About 16 pre-op and the rest since surgery. Feeling great! Just got back from a vacation at an all-inclusive resort......what a difference from last year! LOL

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
