10 days post up! Hungry as heck!

Recommended Posts

I am 10 days post op and feeling very normal. I have some discomfort but no pain. I am able to get all my liquids in plus some. I am tired of Soups and yogurts. I had 1/4 cup ricotta and I told the doctor. He advised me not to do that again because it is too soon. I am hungry. My stomach will not stop growling. I asked the doc if this really worked b/c I thought the grelin hormone (hunger producing hormone was removed) What the heck?? I can get down 6 oz of Soup and then I am literally hungry an hour later. Does anyone else feel this way? The doc says that I once I am able to eat sold foods I will have alot more restriction...is this true? All I know is that I am dreaming of scrammbled eggs!! HA! I had some Tomato Soup today with a dab of fat free cheddar melted in--that was good. But an hour later and I am hungry again!!! Any advice?? Thanks all!

By the way, I am not complaining I lost 26 pounds as of today (this includes the pre op liquid diet.) I have lost 6 since surgery alone, just a bit frustrated from not being able to eat and being hungry. ugh!!

26 pounds???

I'm also 10 days post op.

I did the 580 calorie pre-op for 9 days, hospital for 3 on clear, full liquids since and I have lost 9 pounds. It makes me want to cry.

And yes, I am very hungry. But I'm staying with my full liquid plan because I want to be as safe as possible. Mainly I have no energy. I need to keep working on the Protein.

My guess is that I am getting about 400 calories a day. My surgeon told me last week that I am a "classic metabolically challenged individual". Thanks. But on the other hand, it does confirm I needed this surgery. Diet alone would have never gotten me anywhere.

I'm going to go mope for a while now. I really can't imagine 26 pounds. It just takes my breath. You are soooo blessed.

I have to clarify..i lost 26 since pounds including my pre op diet!!! only 6 since surgery. You are doing great. To get the Protein in, add a scoop of Protein to powder to the ready made Protein Drink..that's how I sneak it in. Good Luck!!

Great job on the weight loss...i too am nowhere near that. I'm down 16lbs and am 12 days post-op. I'm still on Clear Liquids and won't start full liquids til monday. I am like you tho and am so ready to eat. I get really hungry but then as I start to eat some broth, I get full really quickly. I did try yogurt yesterday and was only able to eat a few bites.

I'm shocked you're eating so much already. Did your doctor say that was ok?

How long was your pre-op diet? Mine is 9 pounds in 22 days. It worries me. Doesn't bode well for the future although if I even just lost a few pounds a month and knew I would keep it off I could live with it. I guess.

That's a long time on clear liquids. I can understand why you are hungry. Luckily I only had to do 3 days of clears and then got to move to full which isn't too hard. Boring but not hard.

I fixed cream of potato Soup today with skim milk (for the added protein) then poured the "broth" off into a bowl using a strainer to be sure not to get anything solid. It was my first real temptation. I considered at least licking one of the potato chunks. I hurried up and put the actual "soup" down for the dog before I did something stupid.

My poor little dog will probably need doggie weight watchers soon. He's having a field day from this experience. :D

I had the same problems. Notice I said HAD. It was acid rumblings. I actually got it more after I had eaten than when my stomach was empty.

Are you taking a twice daily antacid (prilosec, pepcid, zantac?) If not, start by adding that. If you are, the magic solution that worked for me is Tums. Sometimes one tablet works, sometimes I have to take two.

Works a champ.

I agree with all the above! (get Protein in, it is an overproduction of acid and it will take your body months to reduce the levels being produced, it is head hunger, etc.)

I am 10 days post op. I am getting the "hungry" rumblings A LOT and want to go inhale the kitchen with every noise! BUT... I have to stop and ask myself - is it acid, or hunger? The real, physical (correct) answer is acid. The mental (wrong) answer from years and years of bad habits is hunger.

So, I don't deny myself... BABY STEPS! BE NICE TO YOURSELF!

Sooooo, if it gets really bad and I start obsessing about it, I get a tiny tea cup of Soup or diet hot chocolate and I am FULL before 5 sips is up. I then walk away. I have proven to myself I wasn't really hungry... I just thought I was. I throw it away because the LAST thing I want to do after going through three days of hell in the hospital and putting my family through everything I have is to stretch this new stomach back out and end up where I started.

Another tip - if I don't want to/ can't get something warm to sip on when I feel like I need to eat, I have been taking Gas-X when the rumblings start and it seems to REALLY help.

HANG IN THERE!!! It will get better!

BTW - GET OFF THOSE SCALES!!!! Stop beating yourselves up! (try going by inches, clothing sizes, etc.) I told myself I am cheating if I get on the scale... and that is the last thing I want to do right now. (good news - my pants are loose and my shirts look baggy.)

It took us years, if not decades, to get to where we are right now - it's gonna take more than a few weeks to get back where we belong.

I am 5 days post op and I am also very hungry and I agree I have been dreaming about food ever since my pre op diet. I just cant wait to eat and I dont want to eat sweets or anything a good healthy meal salmon, fish, tiliapa even a hard boil egg would make me happy. I dont think the hunger hormone was removed either. I have lost 3 lbs since surgery and 19 pounds total from my pre op diet. I have been chewing sugar free gum to calm the anxiety and it helps a little. I am still clear liq. I cant even have a yogurt. My meals consist of 4 oz of Jello 4 oz of chicken broth and 4 oz of protien drink oh and 60 oz of Water. :(

I also want food!!!!!!!!!!

All this will be just HISTORY! but this time not repeating itself. TRUST ME! u will feel a lot better when u move to soft food. I promise.

As said above check with ur doctor about the acid blockers tablets and take them, make sure ur stomach is acting this way for the right reasons.. may be u are drinking something that irritates it. Spices were my major problem. try blending milk with yogurt and enjoying it.. the liquid stage sucks noo question. but it will pass and U WILL FEEL restriction and not only that u will feel SOOOOO SATISFIED:)

congrats on ur journey so far:)

It amazes me how different the post op diet varies for people. I was only on clear liquids for 2 days then on to full liquids for 10 to 14 days and can start mushies between 10 and 14 days after surgery. I am 11 days out and have slowly started yogurt. cheese and eggs. I am not hungry all that often my problem is I think I am and I am afraid I am not getting enough in even though I am following the diet they gave me. I know it is all in my head and really wish it would go away, its hard to go from a huge plate of food to 2 spoonfuls of food. I was told to expect this but it still SUCKS!!!

I agree with this but my place has a bogy you need to hit to move forward on the diet. Granted, they can't control what you do and it's about your own truth but it tends to reinforce that need to see the number move. I've been given my number of what I"m expected to hit at 30 days post op and I don't think I'll make it. The thing is, I completely agree with you! I'm more about doing this right and learning to eat as healthy as I can as my stomach lets me move forward. I've always found a few of the things my program does as counter to what would be a much wiser method but I have also accepted that the office has no "former fatties" working there. I think it makes a huge difference in the personality of a program. But, on the other hand, so far I'm thrilled with my actual surgery and that's why I chose this place. All along I was told I might not enjoy some of their quirks but the surgeon was excellent. And that was dead on target. (Actually maybe a little off as I've actually really NOT liked some of their quirks but learned to keep my mouth shut.)

Take this for what it's worth but chewing sets your stomach in motion for accepting food. When you put gum in your mouth you are signaling for your stomach to create acid and prepare for food. I know it seems it helps but maybe try a day for two without it and see if you notice any diff. Or not. Up to you but just thought I'd offer it as a suggestion.

I wouldn't say I am very hungry. Just occasionally feeling hunger. The liquid satisfies but doesn't tend to last to the next meal. Guess I'm like one of those babies who needs a little Cereal with my formula to keep me from getting cranky. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
