I see on here that some people have drains. I ahve not heard abouyt this from my surgeon and I was wondering if everybody needs them or just certain people and why?

I think it depends on what the surgeon wants/feels is necessary. I had mine removed before I left the hospital, some have it in for a week or so at home, and some folks have no drain

Depends on the surgeon, many DO put a drain in some do not.

It has a two fold service, first to drain any seepage away that the "injured" stomach may produce and to drain any possible leakage the stomach may have. On day 3 we had to drink a purple dye to make sure none appeared in the drain as a check for leakage.

My surgeon told me the same thing when I asked him about leaks. He did not mention the purple dye thing but likes his patients to have the drain for a week. He also said that he is always overly careful with his patients and likes to take all pre-cautions that he can to avoid problems. So, I wouldn't worry about the drain or not. From what I've heard and read they are not a big deal.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
