7th Day Pre-op Diet - Beware of Wonton Soup!

Recommended Posts

I know I posted earlier about the joy of drinking wonton Soup as a part of my 14 day all liquid diet - well I GAINED 1.5 pounds in a few days. I know that the diet shakes that my surgeon has me on is geared toward putting me into ketosis so I was only allowed the shakes, broth and a Protein Bar if I want to replace a shake. Looking back....even though I would only drink the "water" from the soup those nice juicy wonton noodle thingies were floating in the Water so I guess I gave myself a good dose of starch which is really a no no in ketosis. Dangit! Well I know now. The moral to that story is - If you didn't prepare it don't eat it!:D But it tasted so good....

Hello LadyVelvet, IMO it could actually be that the sodium is more the culprit than anything else. Asian inspired foods are super high in sodium. You're probably retaining Water. You might try to flush by upping your Water intake and that extra few pounds likely will drop right off. The same is true supposing it was the noodles particles you drank. Flushing with water will help with that too.

Best of luck! :)

In my opinion - I would not. There is the sodium content (thanks lilMissDiva) that is actually high in all chinese food and if you will be following a low carb diet after surgery - those pesky noodles floating around in the Water eeking out starch will only derail your efforts at staying low carb. I cook (so what the heck was I doing getting chinese takeout) so I will be watching my sodium intake when I make my own. If you don't cook you can buy low sodium chicken broth and just doctor it up with some of the same things that go into wonton Soup like low sodium soy sauce, ginger and chinese rice wine. As you can see this is all still a learning process to me too. Hope I helped.

You are so right - it may have been the sodium. But I have learned my lesson...cook your own dang food!

Thanks :P

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
