I had my first consultation with Dr. Borao and I have to go to a gastroentorologist for a Esophogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) it was explained to me that they put a tube w/ camera down you're throat to check the esophogus, stomache, and part of intestine for abnormalities specifically ulcers. This is done while sedated He says it is routine for all WLS patients of his. I had heard about the upper GI series where you drink the chalky liquid but not this procedure. Has anyone had this done, is it very bad I am nervous about this...:D

Beth,

My wife had this done when she was having stomach trouble, which did turn out to be an ulcer. She finished the procedure and went out to lunch!!! Very simple and pain-free. The worst part, she said, is that she had to gargle with something that numbs your throat a bit and it tasted like "potting soil"!!! You are under anesthesia, but it is called "conscious sedation" and Versed is used. That way you have NO clue what is going on, but can respond to commands, such as "turn on your side", etc. She remembers NOTHING, so don't worry! She really and truly went out to lunch after she woke up, but someone else did have to drive. Best of luck to you and I'm sure you'll do fine. The long name they give this procedure is indeed the scariest part!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
