There is no way for them to know a percentage because we all have different size stomachs to start with. I did see my video and the part they removed looked huge to me. Without a full volume test befroe and after there is no way to have a specific number--it is a guess. The constant they can do is to use the same size tube in forming the remaining stomach sleeve. However due to stomach length being different remaining stomach volume can differ between 2 people with the same surgeon and bougie size. There are also differences in how close they come to the upper and lower stomach valves that affect both volume and chance of strictures. It is definately not a cookie cutter pattern they follow and why I recommend doing research on your surgeon and discussing these topics with them. Many follow the published studies from the leading VSG surgeons and some do their own thing.

But I just wondered why people were suddenly using the percentage number and not the bougie size. I wondered if I had missed something.

I think this is probably because most passing people don't know what a bougie is. While in research mode if they see that their stomach is going to be 80% away, that makes more impact and sense to the uneducated person than to say "your stomach will be cut to the size of a 32 bougie".

Thanks to all those that replied. I just heard through another patient that my surgeon whom I have not met yet, uses a 39 bougie. I want the best results with the least complications. That seems rather large in todays VSG world. It appears bougie size is more important that percentage of stomach removed. I am that 5ft nothing lady. Can't wait to see if she offers me information on how she chose that size or if she offers me something differnt since I am no where near the same height as this patient. I'll let you know in August after I've met her.

It would be easy for them to calculate how much they removed. They would weigh the amount extracted, and based on the bougie size they know how much was left as that would be standard. It's not a 'guesstimate'.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
