I keep seeing people talking about a liquid diet for a certain amount of time prior to the surgery. When I went to the doctor to get the final approval and to meet the surgeon, I asked about the liquid diet. I asked her if it was necessary. She told me that I could if I wanted to, but to just make sure I don't eat anything a certain number of hours before hand. What is the purpose of the prediet? What are suggestions because I have tried some of the Protein Shakes adn have found I can't digest them. They give me really bad gas or diarrhea. Because of being lactose intolerant, even with lactaid, I cant do slimfast. any help would be great.

i was told the reason for the liquid diet is for two reasons , one is to get into the new ruitine of eating the same as the post - op diet without doing it all cold turkey style , but the main reason is the obese patients liver becomes a large fatty organ and its located right in the way of the surgeon when he goes in to do the work on the sleeve , the pre - op diet is low carbs which shrinks the liver so the doctor doesnt have to deal with it so much, when he tries to move it out of the way , it can bleed very easily and then he has to deal with that , which means longer surgery time and longer time under anesth. , as for the protien shakes , i just started my 2 week liquid diet (dr almonza in tijuana) and i havent really found my protien shake that i like yet, hope this all helps!!!

My place said it was all about the liver. You are not at an extremely high weight and have lost over recent time. Since your body is in a losing mode already, they may think you just won't need it. I'd actually ask if some have to do, some don't. It would concern me to use a surgeon who does not have anyone doing a pre-diet (everyone can't be "ready" without it) but I actually would applaud a doctor who applies common sense as to whether you personally need that diet. My place has a one size fits all mentality which has always sort of tickled me about this program. If there was ever a program that should realize one size does NOT fit all, it should be this one!

Go on the safe side and eat very healthy in those last 4 or 5 days. I would suggest cutting out all bad carbs, as tempting as it might be to enjoy that last sweet thing. Enjoy the type of diet you'd expect to be eating once you are sleeved and back to a typical healthy diet.

Thanks. I think that might be why I might not have to do the diet. I will find out more tomorrow at the pre-op. I have lost weight, and all since July, mainly in the last few months. The VA requires 5-10% body weight loss and kept off for the surgery otherwise they start you over again. The surgeon's reasoning was that I had already lost weight and was doing good because I am still losing. I have lost an additional 5lbs since I saw her in February. I am just curious.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
