Vitamin question Post -op

Recommended Posts

I wanted to ask this question in post -op rater than in the Vitamin section because I wanted to see how you approached this post -op. Here is my question. I had a blood panel done prior to going for my pre-surgery blood panel. I did this because I wanted to see if I had any isues before going to the expense of my trip for surgery, my surgery is not local, it will be in Mexico. My blood panel is good and I do not have any vitamin deficientcies. My next step is to start my liquid diet prior to surgery. I read on the forum with most Doctors, they like for you to have a blood panel about 6 months after surgery to make sure you are not deficient in any Vitamins or minerals. I know we will be taking things like Protein, Vitamin D, Iron and b-12 post surgery but everyone is different, how do you know what you are getting enough of and what you are not. Have you found a one a day muti vitamin is enough or did you have to take a bunch of individual vitamins? What dosages of these vitamins did your doctor start you on? How was your blood work after 6 months or after you had it checked again? I hear if you are deficeint in vitamins or minerals and you wait 6 months to find out by a blood panel, it could be too late to correct it with just taking vitamins at that point.

How do you know what dosage to take of what vitamins and minerals directly after surgery and for the next 6 months?

Thank you.

I had a blood panel done 3 weeks out and see my surgeon's nurse this next week at one month out to go over the results. I do this again I believe in another month or two. It's VERY monitored for a year with my group. I can let you know what they recommend, but I'm sure everyone is different. AT 3 weeks out, I'm only on bariatric Vitamins and their Calcium supplement.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
