It definitely does not make the Allergen product look all sunshine and roses.

When I was deciding between the band and the sleeve I read the study results that that article quotes... definitely changed my decision!! It just makes sense to me... you put something into your body that is not meant to be there and eventually you are going to get problems! Even though the sleeve hasn't been around for that long, and so there aren't many long-term stats, people have had gastrectomies for other reasons for years! For example people with stomach cancer... and those patients live long healthy uncomplicated lives. So even though it is new for bariatric surgery that type of procedure is not new at all. I found that that comforted me and helped me make my decision.

Thanks for posting that link!

It is terribly frustrating. I think what is missing from these reports are stories from people like us who really lived through it. It is easy to say that major complications happen to "other people", but I didn't even have major complications - the band just sucked. It was placed by a highly skilled doctor and it still failed. If they could tell the stories of people who have been living with it and desperately trying to get it to work after the 6 month honeymoon period - all the fills/unfills, pain, types of food you can't eat, etc. It would make it so much more real, I think.

Oh well---

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
