Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome & Sleeve

PCOS here, too! I've lost like 10 lbs this week (pre-op diet) which I'm assuming was mostly Water weight, but I'm happy people have positive longer-term results with the sleeve.

I have PCOS. Was sleeved on 12/21/2012 and achieved goal 20 months later. Then dropped about ten more lbs and now I am hovering. It was tough... really difficult to stay positive but the sleeve DOES work, even for us!

The first thing that corrected itself was my cycle. Except for a few blips here and there, in the past two years my cycle has normalized from 60+ days to 29 days. I mean, not that I really ENJOY this regularity now.

I'll tell you what really made the difference for me was strength training + cardio. I LOVE Cardio but I saw good drops when I picked up weights.

@@TheCurvyJones Thanks for the encouragement. I am losing so slow that it gets me down sometimes. I will have to look into adding weights, I have only been using the elliptical and stationary bike.

Hi - I had my band removed 2 weeks ago and am waiting for the sleeve and have PCOS.

I am so glad you are all here!!!

I've been worried that I won't lose weight. Can you share what size your sleeves are. My surgeon plans to do mine at 12 mm? I had to have my band very tight to lose weight because of my PCOS.

What is your Protein, carb, fat ratio in your diet?

Any negative side effects I should be aware of.

Hi All, i am new to the PCOS forum. I was diagnosed with PCOS 15 years ago. I went thru fertility treatment to have my son. I have pretty severe facial hair and insulin resistance. I was sleeved on Dec 22nd. My weight loss has been slow compared to some others. I have so far lost 15 lbs including preop diet. I am a vegetarian and so is very hard to go too low carb as i have to rely on dairy and legumes for my protien and eat veggies. So I am thinking about 40gms per day......my biggest frustration at this point in addition to the weight is facial hair! Can anyone share if losing weight after sleeve has decreased or stopped facial hair?

Are you on Spironolactone to prevent unwanted Hair growth and male patterned baldness? I use that and electrolysis successfully.

I honestly don't know what size my sleeve is. I just broke a very long stall though. I found out that increasing my daily Protein intake has helped me loose a little every day this week. I try my best to keep carbs under 40 and this week moved protein up to 80 G a day. I don't watch fat.

Yes that's why It was prescribed for me and I take to stop with cyst breakouts on my face. It helps block testosterone in the hair follicle. I'm 59 and have been on it for about 15 - 20 years now.

Wanted to chime in here. I was told by a dermatologist performing my laser hair removal that I had PCOS around 18, but didn't receive confirmation from a gynecologist until I was 21. I've been on low ogesterol ever since then. I do find that (pre-surgery) it helped regulate my periods and maybe a little with the facial hair. No matter whether I did Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, no carb, whatever... I yo-yoed and stalled like crazy.

I started my pre-op nutrition in August of last year and had my surgery on January 22nd. In my pre-op nutrition, I lost 17 pounds over six months. It wasn't for lack of trying and exercise, but I stalled terribly and repeatedly. However, that's still some decent amount of weight loss.

Since my surgery, I have lost 41 pounds in just about four months. There have been stops and stalls (including the dreaded weeks 3-5 stall) along the way and it has been a big learning process. I KNOW I can't eat after 9pm or I won't lose weight. I do eat a carb every now and then and I turn out A-okay. I just know I can't go crazy with it. Protein is my friend.

I'm still on LO and find that while I do gain or stall during the first couple of days of my period, it comes off shortly thereafter. The laser hair treatments are far more effective now.

I will also say that I haven't experienced the shedding that many do and while I did take Biotin for the first week or two after surgery, the rate of Hair growth on my face, arms, and legs was so fast, I just had to stop taking it and rolled the dice. It was intolerable honestly.

This all being said, I was so worried I'd be the one PCOS-er who didn't lose weight. I wasn't and you won't be either. I spent the first two weeks of the all liquid diet going back and forth on whether this was worth it or not, but holy HELL, I would never go back on it now.

I wake up every morning excited to hop on the scale. I catch myself debating if I need to go clothes shopping because it's such an enjoyable experience now. I just graduated law school and am having a party on Sunday, but no one there will have seen me since August when I started my nutrition and I can't WAIT to see their reactions to my nearly 60 lb loss.

I can't personally speak to the issue of children being 25 and in no place where I'm ready for, or trying to conceive, children. BUT two of my nurses in the hospital had been sleeved by the same doctor and had children 18 months after surgery. Both had PCOS and had the surgery to be able to conceive. You can do it, ladies!

Good luck and keep the updates coming!

Any weight loss updates?

I was banded in 2008 and didn't have much success with the band. I think the most I lost was 25 pounds (started at a bmi of 30 though). I have had so many problems with the band that I am converting to a sleeve in a couple days. I am hoping I have greater success with the sleeve... I have gained all the weight back I lost being banded plus 30 lbs.

The only time I have ever lost weight without trying and more than 5 pounds in a month was when I did a RAW food 30 day challenge. Lost 12 pounds without trying!!! Even doing low carb with PCOS wasn't nearly as effective.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
