Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome & Sleeve

Recommended Posts

My PCOS began after I had my first child, a boy. I also wasn't aware that having a male fetus instead of a female can cause some sort of change and produce this horrible syndrome. I was shocked to find this out when it happened to my cousin after she had her boy. When she had her first born girl, she was perfectly fine. After her boy her doctor informed her of the affects a male fetus has on the mother and how it can cause the mother to develop PCOS. I would have never related my PCOS to my pregnancy.

Well, MSanti . . . I have heard from others who have been there that the surgery has been effective in helping those with PCOS. I know that it can't make mine any worse . . . and I am confident that it will work. I am confident that it will work for you, too. You seem to know what's going on with your body.

I do wish you all the luck in the world on Monday and during the post-op . . . I look forward to hearing from you how it went and how you are feeling.

Have a fabulous weekend!

I actually had to bring it up to my doctor and get his opinion. Because apparently I did more homework than HE did! I actually had to remind him of the basics behind pcos and tell him why I thought carbs were bad for my condition. Finally he said your right! I tell ya I dont know what they teach these people! I stuck to Atkins for 6mths solid with no temptation but only lost 20lbs. I then of course did what we all do and gave up. I gained only 5lbs back however. I still try my best to cut down on carbs but I have to admit I havent been very good at it this last year or so. Im so glad that I am on a journey that may help with this situation! Good luck to us all!!! :D

I too have PCOS & hypothyroidism. I had my surgery almost 3 weeks ago. I lost 17 lbs the first week and then hit a stall for week 2 and half of my 3rd week. I finally lost 4 lbs this past weekend. I was very depressed about the stall, and figured that because of my PCOS I was amongst the few that the surgery doesn't work for. I hope I am wrong. I wish all my PCOS sisters well!

I am scheduled for surgery on June 8th and I am frantic with worry regarding whether or not my pcos or insomnia will prevent me from losing.

Don't get discouraged ladyblue72! You have done really well thus far! 21 pounds is a big accomplishment! I am currently on week 6 and I stalled from week 3-6 it sucked!! But I tried other things and began working out and now I am losing about a pound per week. It doesn't seem like a lot but ill take it!! It may take us longer to shed the weight but we will get there! Good luck!

For me, this has been the best thing ever! I have been struggling with weight gain for the last 8 years, and was finally diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago. This surgery is working so well for me. I have done every diet known, only to lose a few pounds and gain it back + some. Since surgery, my energy levels have increased tremendously, I haven't needed any diabetes meds, I just got taken off BP meds, and after another blood test in 3 months, I may be taken off cholesterol meds as well. My periods have already become "normal" (shorter and less heavy) and on time! I feel like a new person already!

Congratulations on your success mjs6172, you are doing really well! As for me; I am currently three months out and the first two months I had a regular length period. This month has been a bit irregular again...spotting for two weeks and finally got it this week. I have noticed though that the bleeding is considerably less heavy. Thank god for that!! I still haven't had it as scheduled and I am hoping to one day get there.

Does your weight fluctuate up and down during the week?

I have not yet been sleeved but I am just starting the process. I to have pcos ugh. I have spoken to a friend who has pcos and was sleeved 18months ago. She said her carb intake totaly controls her loss. She has got it down to a science for her body. She said if she goes above 19g of carbs she stalls. So I am thinking we all will have to play around with the amount of carbs we all comsume.....Good luck all and I look forward to joining the loser list soon!

If I go over my limit on carbs I too stall and I also notice if i'm not drinking enough Water I stall as well:) So, I allow myself some cheat days to have my carbs but most days I follow my diet...... basically with pcos whenever you eat carbs they turn strait into sugar and go straight to you tummy....at least that's what happens to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
