justdance 0 Posted April 27, 2011 So I had a Protein Shake and it was about 8 ounces and took me about an hour to drink. I'm 8 days out and very fearful that I drank to much because I felt so full. I just am scared I could cause myself a leak. I feel like I push liquids to the limit.. all u ever hear is people saying liquids go right through. But do they? I don't have pain but I'm working myself into a tizzy thinking a may have caused a problem. Help me get my sanity
snowfie9 6 Posted April 27, 2011 Do try not to push anything "to the limit" if you can avoid it. Just because you made 8oz of something doesn't mean you have to finish it (which is a difficult mindset to get out of for people like us). That being said, if you made your shake with milk, unlike other liquids, milk does need to be "digested". Assuming you're not lactose intolerant, your stomach makes an enzyme to allow the body to process lactose so it takes longer to go through. This is why it's physically impossible to drink a gallon of milk in under an hour (while it is quite possible to do so with a gallon of water). I remember a local radio station daring people to do that for concert tickets. They got a man and a woman and had them both ATTEMPT to drink a gallon of Water in under an hour. The man vomited a pint short. The woman got the gallon down but was in so much pain she said it was WORSE than childbirth. (this weird bit of trivia brought to you by Dawn, because that's what she does)
sassygirl 1 Posted April 27, 2011 I think that you probably did over do it ... If u felt that full. But don't think that u hurt your sleeve . Stay calm and next time cut back a few ounces . You don't want to get to that point of feeling miserable! Keep your head up and keep working your tool. Good luck!!!
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted April 27, 2011 I was supposed to drink 2 oz every 10 min so 8 oz over an hour is not really all that bad. Just sip, Don't sip to the point of being uncomfortable. You do need your Protein and your liquids, but just sip slowly. Every day should be easier where you can take bigger sips.
mandems mom 3 Posted April 27, 2011 I was told to have 1 shake per day and split it in half between 2 meals; so you may have overdone it. Our little tummies are only meant to take 2-4 oz right now and although liquids pass through quickly, the shakes are more substantial than juice or Water. Try splitting it in half next time and see if you feel better.
jacob bensen 1 Posted April 27, 2011 I agree with mademe moms! Our little tummies are only meant to take 2-4 oz right now and although liquids pass through quickly, the shakes are more substantial than juice or Water and take water regularly and eat healthy diet, nutrient rich. LilMissDiva Irene 3,282 Posted April 27, 2011 8 oz of Protein Shake just might be a bit much for you right now right out of surgery. Maybe make your shakes around 4-6 oz for right now. You can refrigerate what's left for the next meal. Good luck!
justdance 0 Posted April 27, 2011 Thanku everyone. Really appreciate your input. It's just that after having a complication already which was bleeding at staple site and being rushed back into surgery 5 hours after my original one. I'm a bit paranoid of a leak now. Followed by some buyers remorse I'd even hate to say. My diet is so strict meat cheese eggs and cottage cheese. That's it for the next 2 months. I want refried Beans and ricotta cheese and yogurt, milk, etc. Can't even have marinara sauce. Nothing with tomatoes. I really thought I could handle the diet. Just have to stay positive
Virginia S 13 Posted April 27, 2011 I did that yesterday and was miserable right into the evening. I've learned that clears go through me, but Protein drinks pile up. I posted on another forum yesterday and a lot of old timers talked me down. One time isn't a disaster, they said, just don't make a habit of it. Do what I did - resolve to drink your Protein Drinks very slooooooowly. Make a smaller one and have it twice as often. Whatever works for you. One thing this tells me - and I hope you: we'll have good restriction when we can finally eat again, which for me is one meal of mushies a day starting Monday and gently working my way up to more mushies, less shakes. You're OK.
justdance 0 Posted April 27, 2011 Thankyou Virginia. You really helped calm me down as well.
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted April 27, 2011 Why is your diet so strict that you can't have the things that most people can have on the post op diet, like ricotta cheese? is it because of the complication after surgery?
justdance 0 Posted April 28, 2011 No I wish. That's all he allows and then at 2 months I can introduce veggies and 3 months fruits. Trust me I have thought of doing what all u are doing but not sure if I should. I hate cottage cheese but love ricotta. I'm seeing him Friday and I'm gonna ask if I can have some kinda break.
