Recommended Posts

Hi! Valentina here. I have a SEVERE allergy to SOY!!! I go into anaphalaxis whenever I consume the least bit. I have been hospitalized several times because of it. I break out is whelts if it contacts me. I need some comments to send to my insurance company as to why getting sleeved is medically indicated over gastric bypass. Please, check the labels on your Protein Drinks, Snacks, Desserts, etc before answering. I thank you all in advance. I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!

Valentina

PS:

Please keep in mind that "whey" is soy based if not note otherwise...

Are you sure about whey=soy? All the Protein drinks I have been collecting today are whey isolate but it is from milk, not soy.

I know that in the past I can thank at least one hospitalization for "whey". Manufacturers are more than a bit sneaking in their advertising. Soy is sometimes called: vegetable Protein, natural Protein, natural thickening agent, etc.

There is milk whey, but if you read on, do you see the word "soy" anywhere on the label or any of the remarks above?

I also have Osteoarthritis and have just had a total left knee replaced. I take NSAID daily. This I think will also help sway my insurance company because with the bypass, and the band one should not take NSAIDS due to ulceration formation.

My insurance has not said "no" yet. I just want to be ready. I have a surgery date of June 6th. It has been a lllllooooonnnnnggggg road for me to get this far.

PLEASE, PLEASE, if anyone has an idea, let me know. You all are always soooo supportive. In fact this site is my only support, so once again "I lean on you".

Take care and Good Health,

Valentina

Oh my- sure enough, the whey isolate protein I got at GNC today says it contains milk and soy Beans. I had no idea! Goodness- that will make it very difficult for you- I feel for you!

I a uncertain about what you are asking though- the connection between the insurance matter and your soy allergy? I think it is hard to determine what you need help with?

I guess what I am asking for is some imaginative wordage to have on hand in case the insurance company wants to know why I think I need a sleeve instead of the bypass that they have already agreed to. I am looking at my own medical history to give them some medical necessity for the sleeve.

Well it seems to me that as a person with an extreme allergy to a commonly used food additive you are already very limited in your food choices for keeping good nutrition, so a surgery with a malabsorption factor like the bypass would be counterindicated for you. Would that be something you could use?

FYI: I have an allergic reaction to soy as well. Not as severe as yours though. I have had great success with the Amplify shakes. You can only get them from GNC though and from personal experience--not all GNC stores carry them. I like both the vanilla and Strawberry/Banana. 120 calories 4 carbs and 21 grams of Protein. I used this all last year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
