Able to drink too much too soon??

Recommended Posts

I'm 10 days post op and my restriction seems to be really low. When I first left the hospital, it was work to try and get in all my Liquid Protein and Water. I was hitting my Protein minimum (paranoid about losing my hair later on, so I'm very anal about drinking it) and sometimes my water. However, now that I'm 10 days post op and my stomach swelling is down, I'm able to drink 1 cup of liquid fairly easily over 30-45 minutes. Is that too quick?? I feel like I should have much more restriction. I'm able to get in all my protein and water consistently now. I know that's good, but it seems like so many others are still struggling at my point. Sample of my daily food:

whey shake (15 pro) + 1/2 cup 1% milk (5 pro) + 1/2 c. water = 20 grams

sf pudding + 1/4 cup 1% milk to dilute + nasty gall bladder meds = avg 5 grams

Whey shake (15 pro) + 1/2 cup 1% milk (5 pro) + 1/2 c. water + 2' slice of banana + 2 t. Peanut Butter = 22 grams

sf pudding + 1/4 cup 1% milk to dilute + gall bladder meds = avg 5 grams

1 cup cream of broccoli (insert Soup here) soup = no pro, but tired of sweet by this point

sf pudding + 1/4 cup 1% milk to dilute + gall bladder meds = avg 5 grams

And then I try and squeeze in 6 cups of water in throughout the day

BTW - my shakes all have less than 5 carbs in the pack and minimal fat.

Does this diet look about right, or am I getting too much milk/carbs? I'm able to get this all in every day to hit my goals. I've lost about 9 pounds. Thoughts? Or am I just paranoid? I am so used to diets failing, I'm a little worried about it. Thanks for all your help!

I am not feeling much restriction either, and I am about 10 days out too. I think our swelling just went down really quick. My doctor assures me that the restriction will be very noticeable once we get to more solid foods

I've seen this question a lot, and the answer from the old timers always seems to be "wait until you're eating solid foods and you'll feel the restriction." I'm counting on that - I turned the corner yesterday (day 5) and am drinking quite comfortably as long as I don't overdo it. So I'm right there with you - but all the sleeve patients in my surgeon's practice are doing well with loss, so I'm going to keep faith.

Good luck.

I had surgery the day after you & while I'm still on Clear liquids and have trouble getting all my Water in, I'm also not feeling the extreme restriction we 'enjoyed' in the days immediately following surgery.

That said, I was just making mashed potatoes for Easter dinner at my Mom's house and taste-tested the smallest bites to be sure it was good & see what els I needed to add. I probably had 2 teaspoons over the course of 10 minutes and feel FULL! Of course, now I'm going to worry I screwed up my sleeve 'cause I can't cook without tasting for quality as I go. :(

Thank you all for indulging my paranoia. It's so much more comforting knowing that other patients from other doctors are experiencing the same thing. I desperately want this to work, so I think that desperation is making me a little crazy. Guess my next YouTube video will be addressing that! lol "Post-Op Insanity" Happy Easter to everyone. May we all have strong will-power amongst the gluttons of the day!

GIRLFRIEND! You are doing great! I could drink the same as you at your stage too. I worried about restriction too... Others on here told me that when you start eating dense Proteins then it will be VERY clear that you have the restriction you paid for. When I got there I had good restriction. 2 1/2 ozs of dense Protein, and BAM...full. As I can eat a little more, I add my lovely veggies. (at last!) You and I had the same surgeon... he uses a 36 bougie a little loose, then stitched. (Others on here got a 32.. not a lot smaller, but a little smaller for sure). He also leaves the pyloric end a little bit wider than some. This may accommodate more liquid, and liquids do leave the stomach pretty fast. Faster than solids. You will be fine. Get in your good quality proteins, and liquids, and keep moving up the food scale. When you get to mush and beyond, you will feel the power of the tummy! And if you haven't yet, join our Sac Sleeve support group!

They say to think of your sleeve as a drain. If you put liquid in it just runs straight thru, but if you put solids in like Protein it gets clogged (FULL FEELING). that is why they encourage you to eat protein first and avoid liquids when you eat cuz it pushes your clog thru. make sense?

I think you are fine too. I can drink the Protein Drinks without much difficulty at all but my couple of bites of scrambled eggs this morning let me know that I have a restriction! I was bad in trying the eggs early (shouldn't have until Wednesday) but I wanted a bit of scrambled egg so much. They tasted fabulous but I could only eat about 2 tablespoons total over 30 minutes. I think when we get on "real" foods soon enough we find out what this sleeve is all about!!

yep the doctor told me it was like a funnel with just liquids..wait until you get to solid foods and you will be on the floor screaming with 3 ounces.lol anyway it is normal you wont feel the restrictions like he said until you get to solids.. But it really seems like that you are doing wonderful..

My doctor put me on Soups and mushies 5 days post op... 2 Tbsp of mashed potatoes is nothing to worry about! biggrin.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
