Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Maybe this is a stupid question....

Recommended Posts

In the past, I've always gotten really sick if I take pain meds (like vicodine) on an empty stomach. Sometimes even Motrin will upset my stomach if I don't eat a carb serving with them... what is it like after surgery when you not only don't WANT to eat, but CAN'T eat?

I hope that doesn't sound like a stupid question, but I'm such a wuss when it comes to pain! LOL

Thanks.

Wendy

I didn't have to take any pain meds after the 4th post-op day...I'm not really sure if this answers your question, though.

In the hospital they gave me medicine in my IV for nausea. You can get a prescription if you are nauseous at home too.

You should always take any pain meds with whatever food depending on stage you are on. You can take it with a Protein drink.

Here's another way of looking at it: I found out my last night in the hospital that I'm allergic to Vicodin - they were transitioning me to oral meds and after my first dose OMG the itchies! Only good thing is they gave me benadryl so I finally got some sleep. The upshot, though: I came home on Extra Strength Tylenol, with Tylenol PM at night to help me sleep, and I've done just great (surgery was this past Monday). I did take the ES Tylenol every 6 hours like clockwork the first couple days, but haven't had anything at all today (day 5) because I forgot if you can imagine.

Maybe you won't need to be on narcotics.

Good luck. You'll do fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
