Watch out for vinegar!!

Recommended Posts

I had plication surgery almost 7 weeks ago and really haven't had much trouble with any food I've tried so far, although I haven't tried eating steak, yet. Anyway, tonight my husband made a turkey meatloaf with a mustard sauce recipe that he found in a magazine. It included dry mustard, vinegar and evaporated milk. It tasted just like horseradish sauce which I usually don't like, but I liked this one. Anyway, a few minutes after I started eating it, I started experiencing a strong burning sensation in my stomach. It just got worse and I had to quit eating. I took a couple of Tums and it did subside a bit, but now, more than an hour and a half later, I'm still experiencing some pain and discomfort in my stomach. Anyone else have that problem? I'm pretty sure it had to be the vinegar.

I'm thinking it's the mustard...when my dog ate a toy, the vet suggested mustard in Water to cause him to vomit. Mustard is an irritant (mustard plaster, anyone?) and I'll betcha your stomach still has some sore spots...the Tums should have neutralized the vinegar.

Just curious FtoP, did you take off 31 pounds in 7 weeks? That's wonderful! My plication is next Thursday...I can't wait to watch the scale go down...I have my Protein Drinks and Crystal light ready.

No, unfortunately I've been losing pretty slowly. I lost 18 lbs preop (5 lbs previously, then 13 lbs in one week of the preop diet), so have only lost another 13 lbs since my surgery. I was on a stall for 3 whole weeks which really slowed things down a bit. I think I've been struggling with keeping the carbs down. When I eat too many carbs, my weight loss slows down.

I wish you great luck and smooth sailing with your surgery next week! You'll do fine. Even though my weight loss is slow, I definitely think the surgery has helped me to rethink what I eat and how MUCH I can eat!! But you still have to do the work and make the right decisions about what goes into your mouth. That's been a learning process for me since the surgery.

But, hey, 13 lbs in not quite 7 weeks is still almost 2 lbs a week which would be 104 lbs in a year! I'll take that!

I think the mustard (and maybe vinegar too) was irritating the staple line. I had this with chilies around the same time.... at 13 weeks, no problem with a little hot chili.

Well 13 pounds is excellent as well ;-) in the last ten years since hitting my high weight the most I could lose was 10 pounds before I'd fall and give in to cravings. I'm an emotional eater and when I'm having a bad day I'll load up the kids and go get some comfort at the nearest drive thru...but since my cholesterol is at a mind blowing 700 I decided that I'd have to make some big changes, plication and eating habits being the first. I'm 42 and i have 4 boys (12, 7, 5, and 18 months) and I want to be around for them a loooong time!

Thanks for the good wishes! I also wish you continued success, you are on to a great start!

Cholesterol of 700??? Wow...but, no worries, you're on the right path!! I definitely know what you mean about emotional eating. I kind of miss being able to reach out for that same comfort now, but I'm glad I can't! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
