Surgeon Said Skip Mushies?

Recommended Posts

So, I am 2 weeks and 1 day post op- and I visited with my surgeon yesterday. He said that for this week to do puree food, and then next wednesday I can start introducing real food (Such as shredded chicken, string cheese, etc.) I also have some kaiser papers that give information on when/how to introduce veggies and how to cook them for a while. I was just wondering if anyone else was given similar information about re-introducing food? He said I'd be eating pretty normally by the second week of May.

Wow, that's fast. I'd say just take it easy and if anything bothers you just back off, mushies are always an option.

Day 5 post op my doctor said I could eat mushies... I didn't try until today.. day 9.. and I thought I was going to die... I took 2 really small bites of mushy quiche.. just the egg part..i chewed well and it just seemed to get stuck somewhere along the way.... it gave me hiccups, to i took a tiny sip of Water.. then ended up in the bathroom puking.... I'm going back on liquids for 2 more weeks to give the swelling time to go down then I'm going to do mushies... I'm just going to stick with the Cornell VSG Diet Guidelines.. here's a link: http://www.sleeveguide.com/new-post-op.html

Just do whatever makes you feel comfortable.... and good luck!!

Thanks for posting the link to the Cornell guidelines Starygirl. I have pretty extensive instructions from my nutritionist but I am going to take a look at these and compare! We are all unique in how quickly we can transition to foods. I tried a bit of oatmeal for Breakfast this morning and that was an adventure. I made 1/2 cup which was a joke of course. I put about 1/4 cup of cooked oatmeal in my bowl with splenda and had a couple of tiny bites. It took me 45 minutes to eat about 1/8 of a cup and I reheated it during that time too. It tasted good though to have something that wasn't a pureed Soup or Protein shake! Can't wait for a scrambled egg!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
