Last Monday, I had my upper endoscopy done and the GI dr. took a bioposy of my stomach. Today he sent me an email stating that they bioposy found H. Pylori bacteria and that he sent antibotics to the pharmacy and I should take Nexium 2 times a day with it for 2 weeks. Then, 6 weeks later, give a stool sample to my dr. and see if it is gone. That would be a total of 2 months from now!

My question is this: I am suppose to have surgery in 3 weeks. Are they going to let me have it or am I going to have to wait until everything comes back as normal?

Everything has gone so smoothly up until now and this really upsets me! Has anyone else had this and did you have to wait?

Thanks,

Kelly

I tested positive for H. Pylori three weeks before my surgery. I had to take a serious antibiotic regiment for two weeks (Prev-pack). Dr still performed surgery without any problems on the scheduled date.

Well, I haven't received any emails or calls from the Dr. stating that my surgery can not go on as planned. So, i assume I am still good!

They gave me HORSE pills tho!!! And lots of them! OMG! I have to take 2-500 mg Amoxicillin twice a day and 2 500 mg Biaxin twice a day for 14 days. During this time, I also have take a Nexium with each dose!

It is making me feel awful and giving me a metal taste in my mouth. I guess it will all be worth it in the end when I do not have H. Pylori any longer and am sleeved.

Thanks for listening!

Kelly :D

Those are some heavy duty antibx be sure that you're either eating a lot of yogurt or taking acidophilus or other pro-biotics so your lower digestive tract isn't stripped completely of all bacteria.

IKR??? that is what i thought too. Am i going to get another infection (if you know what i mean) because i don't have any bacteria left in my system?? Worries me!!

I ate yogurt this morning with my Breakfast. I am going to take some acidophilus tonight.

Thanks for the advice.

My question is...why wouldn't you just ask your doctor that question?

I actually did not find out I had H. Pylori until after I had surgery. I was given the Prev-Pac and so far so good. I don't think they have to reschedule your surgery, some do some don't. I think if that was the case he would have said that. No worries, I believe your surgery will go on as planned.

Middlesiter 57, I did ask my Dr., but when I first found out, I asked here as I had to email my Dr. and sometimes it takes a few hours/day for him to respond!!

Yeah, I am good. They said no worries. I did find out that once you have been treated for it, it is unlikely you will ever get it again!! That was good news.

You know what else was weird? I took a blood test for it and it was negative, but the biopsy was positive. My Dr. is concerned about FALSE negative tests now! He is going to do research to see how many their are to see if blood tests are accurate!

Thanks everyone! Still taking HUGE amounts of antibotics and they are still making me feel crapy!! Only 10 days left!

I think everyone is tested for H-pylori. The upper GI is not done by all surgeons. At least the 1st surgeon I was going to did not request me to have one. However, my new surgeon has me getting one.

i think if you have a cautious surgeon, they will do the testing. they want to make sure that your perfectly o.k. before they go and make things worse for you.

mine said the purpose of the test was to make sure that my acid reflux had not damaged me too badly for surgery. i already have it and it can be brought on by the sleeve. he did not want to do surgery and it be worse than it already was. he was just being cautious, which i am thankful for.

Hi Kelly, I just got the call that I tested positive for H Pylori as well. I really hope this does not push back my surgery but I forgot to ask the nurse that called.

Do you know if this means we are still at risk for ulcers or  stomach cancer ?!?!

Since H Pylori can be contracted via mouth, does this mean I need to have my kids tested?? Anyone ever had the "breath test" for H Pylori? I would NOT want to subject my kids to the EGD!!!

Good questions Kelly. Thanks for asking! (and sharing your results!)

They say that it is contagious, but I am not sure how it is spread. I do not know if you have to touch someone's stomach acid juices, poo, or sneez on them. LOL!! I would ask the Dr. how it is spread.

It did not delay my surgery date, BUT, I just finished my antibotics yesterday and my surgery is Monday. I am sure if you can be treated before your surgery, you will be fine. I had to take antibotics for 14 days. I also have to wait 2 weeks and give a poo sample to see if it is gone, but I will be sleeved by then and my surgeon said it was o.k.

I am sure you will be fine to still have the surgery. I was worried too, but it all worked out! If you are worried, ask the Dr. that is what they get paid the big bucks for.!! LOL

Best of luck to you!

Kelly ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
