Pureed foods arent working out!!

Recommended Posts

I have been on pureed food since 4/13/2011, but its not working out. I cook my food and add broth to it. Even though I took a long time to eat, I thrown up twice. I just tried today after three days of just shakes, milk, and Clear Liquids. I'm not hungry, but I know I need to advance to real food, any advice?

It will come you just have to give it some time. If you are not tolerating puree foods than stay with liquids another couple of days.. Add puree foods in one at a time. Your new tum tum has to get used to the puree and the consistancy of it. Just because your doctor gives you a schedule when you should be on what food at what time. He too will tell you to back off and when you add puree foods back to your diet do it slowly. maybe half of a day with thick liquids and the other part of the day puree. Most important thing is if your body is rejecting it back up a step you have the rest of your life to eat regular foods. I had to back off soft foods because it was irratating my sleeve. I went to liquids for a bout a week and the next week it was soo much better for me.. I hope that helps you a little. good luck and keep us posted.

I never vomited but I could tell by the first bite whether it was going to make me sick to my stomach and I stopped eating. Just like "NotFat..." I stuck with full liquids like yogurt and puddings a bit longer. One day, I figured out that flavors I really liked was the key. I ate mashed sweet potatoes with Splenda and Cinnamon, mashed potatoes, mashed pinto Beans and black Beans, and finely chopped boiled eggs with a bit of mayo on saltine crackers. I found ground turkey was easier to chew and, when mixed with beans, was quite tasty. I would melt a small amount of cheese on top of the beans and ground turkey - getting in some extra Protein. I never really pureed my food - just took really small bites and chewed very, very carefully. I ate several times a day - and, of course, sipped on everything. I'm still very cautious - there are still things that I won't eat because I feel "sick" when chewing the first bite.

Just take it easy...like you said - you're not hungry but you know you have to get some nutrional value. Take your Vitamins, drink your protein... it will get better.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll be posting about your successes soon!

Like the others have said, take your time. If it doesn't work, step back. I had started puree'd foods, had issues, went back into the hospital unable to eat or drink. I do have some complications but the doctors also believe there was just too much inflamation still in my sleeve, then as of Friday I went back to real food again.

If I puree, I find taking some sort of casserole or chili works best. I add lots of stuff to thin it out to really bring it down. LIke this chicken casserole we had. On the top of the chicken I put a mixture of cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, and sour cream on top. I had to add a lot of the sauce to make it work well. It looked awful though.

If I try plain chicken, picking up a rotisserie from the store is the most most and I add lots of BBQ Sauce before puree'ing it.

The last day in the hospital I tried lasagna, they used a TON of sauce before blending it up to make sure it broke down enough for me to eat.

Just make sure to use LOTS of sauce and eat slowly. Using a childs spoon take a bite, put the spoon down. Chew it still, swallow, then sit for a minute before trying again. It's all trial and error in the beginning. YOu might be able to think you can eat that last bite to only throw it up because you simply got too full.

There is no shame in having to step back some and try again later/

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
