Staying Hydrated

Recommended Posts

I am new to the forums and trying to get all my questions answered, this board has been great. My surgery has not been booked yet but i am getting very close. I question has to do with Water consumption and staying hydrated. I am not as concerned about post op, i am more concerned about 1,2,6 or more months out. Will i still be able to drink plenty of water and fluids or are they restricted from now on after surgery?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums!! :)

At first it will seem like baby steps. You will only be able to take tiny sips at first and will have to wait some time between each one as well. It's best to measure your intake at this time. Keep in mind all your clears will count toward your daily total (broths, Gatorade, Jello, etc.)

Over time you will be able to drink more and more. You will never be able to chug drinks again like pre-op. However for example, so far today I've already had 112 oz. and it's only 3:22 PM. Wow that's a lot!! BTW I'm over 7 months post op.

Good luck!!

You are only restricted immediately post-op due to swelling and sometimes cold fluids may cause esophageal or tummy spasms, but if you try room temp or warm it may not. But we need to strive for getting 64 + oz daily and the further out from surgery the easier it gets. You shouldn't have problems later getting all you want in.

I still struggle with getting enough Fluid each day..not because I can't, just that I forget. Since we don't drink with meals it's hard to remember to drink later and for some reason I don't get thirsty. I can definitely gulp quite a bit now though, if that is your question.

I am 8 months post op and have been drinking fluids as I did pre-op for several months now. For example I can drink 20 oz. of Water in a couple of minutes. I have zero problems drinking or eating anything.

Good luck on your journey, :D

I am worried about this too. I typically only drink Water with lemon, but I chug like 20oz at a time. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night so thirsty that I keep a gallon of water by my bed now. I usually drink a min of 64 oz of water a day, but Im concerned with how I am going to accomplish that post op for the first month or two? Do you just take an oz shot every 15-30 min? I also need to know the stages of food. I meet with the nutritionist on Friday, but I think I need to get started with new routine asap.

For a normal person 8 glass of Water is enough to be hydrated, you must consult your doctor they will better suggest you that how much water is good for you before surgery as it all depends on person to person(before surgery).

I was sleeved on April 18th.

My FAVORITE drink of choice is ice cold Water.< /p>

i felt very thirsty after surgery and was told that it takes a while for our bodies to replinish the fluids we need. So sip, sip, sip. I do not like any of the sugar free drinks.

I finally found something that works for me. I wanted to chug water so badly because my mouth felt like it had cotton in it.

My solution is CRUSHED ICE...... If you have a Sonic near you, they have these small ice chips, I get a large cup of crushed ice and eat on it all day long. It keeps me satisfied.

Hope this helps!:)

I don't have any issues with drinking... Immediately after the op I was given a sponge to suck on... that was weird, but it worked!! About a mth post op I could take down half a normal gulp of Water and now 10mths on I drink as I did pre sleeve. The only difference now, is that I don't drink with or immediately after food. I tend to wait 30-40 mins and then have a drink.

Hope that helps... but we are all different! =]

I'm just under 2 weeks and can take some pretty normal size gulps of my ice cold Water. However, I am finding it difficult to remember to drink constantly and have found that I'm starting to get dehydrated these past few days. That's my own issue though and nothing to do with the sleeve.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
