Butterfly5 1 Posted April 17, 2011 I am in desperate need of a diet coke!! I didn't think it would be this difficult to not drink it but in the last week I have really wanted one. Any advice on the topic? I am 6 weeks out. Thanks in advance!!!
angelantx 0 Posted April 17, 2011 I know they advise not to drink sodas, but i will allow myself 1/2 of one every now and then. I have heard some people say to let it go flat then drink it...but that defeats the point to me! I know the thing is that it is supposed to stretch your pouch...but i have read where they say it's only temporary from the gas it causes. again, moderation! I only have one here and there and i just have a few sips. makes me feel like i'm not being deprived!
Billy363627 15 Posted April 17, 2011 I would suggest opening one and let it go flat.. You cant have the carbonation,, But you can have it flat. I guess it is better than nothing at all. I usually take a small drink of my wife's and held it in my mouth until all the fizz is gone and then swallow it.
coops 1,790 Posted April 17, 2011 I am nine mths out and I still don't drink any kind of pop/soda... luckily I don't miss it so it isn't a huge problem. The only thing that bothers me is that I used to drink cider on a night out with the girls... I miss that more...lol I would leave it another couple of weeks or let it go flat as peeps above have mentioned!
kellyw74 258 Posted April 17, 2011 My doc and nut say to NEVER have soda or caffeine again! I do not drink either anyway, so not a big deal for me, but I can understand not being able to. I use to drink 6 diet pepsi's a day 10 yrs. ago and just quit one day. Man, did I have severe headaches for about a week!! The caffeine I guess is an irritant and the bubbles cause gas to our new tummies. Best of luck! Kelly
Jebellah 0 Posted April 17, 2011 I've been really good with my surgeon's reccommendations but I was dying for a diet coke last week, myself. I ended up buying one, taking 3 sips and throwing it out. I had heard your tastes change after surgery but I hadn't really experienced it until now... it just wasnt good. I'm glad I tried it because now I can stop thinking about it. Had I still enjoyed it though I had planned to only have half a cup or so and then throw the rest out. Avery occassional treat because I know the carbonation isn't good for me anymore. cludgie 81 Posted April 17, 2011 I'm not sure how accurate it is, but I read on another thread that someone had been told by their surgeon it was ok as long as you stir some of the fizz out with a spoon before you drink it! I was most afraid of giving up fizzy drinks out of all the changes I have faced, I would get through 8-10 litres of pepsi max a week until my surgery, and I have to admit that I have had a few sips since (when no other drink option was available) and its just soooo uncomfortably gassy!! I found a bottle a few weeks ago which was so old it was completely flat, and it was nice, but it didn't particularly make me want more of it. I guess that as time passes and habbits change the urge does reduce significantly. The biggest problem I have is finding suitable mixers with alcoholic drinks (cranberry juice all the way now!). I do on occasion allow myself a beer or a cider, but some of those tend to be more bubbly than others (I do do the stirring trick, which looks a little odd in a pub), but I've found some ar emuch more gassy than others, so if I find one that goes down nicely I'll try that again in future, and slowly avoid the ones that didn't suit. wow - I just re-read my post and realised how much it sounds like I drink!!! he he! M2G 1,836 Posted April 17, 2011 LOL, I read your title "Diet Coke When?" and thought to myself NEVER AGAIN!!! Well, I probably should never say never, but I gave up diet soda 7 months ago (a month before being sleeved) and I just don't miss it all. I also haven't had an (alcoholic) drink in just as long, and so far I haven't missed that yet either. But my surgeon's NUT said the same thing, let it go flat (but then I've heard people say what the point?...why drink flat soda ...sorta takes the fun out of it, IMO!) But hopefully you can find a way to get rid of the craving.
So Cal Kurt 32 Posted April 17, 2011 I was also told never to have carbonated drinks. Lucky for me, no one told me no caffeine. I even asked about coffee because I am a shift worker. I was told as long as it isn't a 500 calorie latte I was fine. The truth is, after 10+ months of no diet coke, I have no desire for it. I would drink 6-12 cans a day. not to mention going out and swilling down 4 or 5 giant cups. I have tried a sip every now and then and it tastes terrible. I think just getting away from the carbonation and the artificial sweeteners alone are a big benefit. It never ceases to amaze me how every Dr has his own idea of what requirements should be.
