i am four days post surgery. Been having all sorts of problems with burping, liquids getting stuck very painfully during even the tiiest sips, and also with barfing almost 1/2 of all i intake still.

Any suggestions for the painful burps?

Sorry to hear your not feeling so well. I too had a lot of chest pain for the first 4 days or so, with super tiny sips. It seemed if I would walk around while sipping (basically pacing my room) that helped a little. Your really swolen still for surgery and mine was way better day 5 an on. I can't answer to the throwing up, hopefully someone here can help. Good luck, I do know that everyday I feel a little better.

Are you on Pepcid or the like? In addition, Gas-X has worked well for me at my surgeons suggestion. Just take it slow...everything is so swollen in there. Remember they had to stick the bougie down your throat to your stomach to use as a guide for size to cut your new tummy too, so everything is swollen and ultra sensitive. Are you drinking liquids cold or warm? May make a difference.

It does get better. Promise! You are going through the toughest part right now. Just hang in there!

What types of liquids are you drinking? I was stuck with "clear" liquids for the first 10 days. I also had severe gas discomfort and burping, but did not have the barfing problem.

I was told not to exceed 2 oz. per 15 minutes, and immediately post-op I couldn't handle *near* that amount. I actually "measured" my sips when I got home from the hospital by drinking from a 1 ounce plastic shot glass to see what they felt like. I found I did best when it took 3-4 sips to finish that 1 oz. measure. Now (day 18) I can easily drink large 1 oz. sips if I want, but it's not really a good idea.

Walking around and/or sitting-up definitely help. Every time I felt like I needed to burp or got that stuck feeling, just getting up for a couple minutes and walking around allowed me to burp and feel more comfortable. I know it sounds stupid, but many people experience a significant amount of gas issues immediately post-op.

I was also told that warm tea helps reduce swelling and promote healing, but I only drank it while in the hospital. Some also say Gas-X strips help. I tried them, but I'm not sure if they helped or if it was more due to the passage of time.

I'm not sure about the throwing up. Maybe take one tiny sip, walk around and wait awhile rather than taking a few tiny sips back to back. You might also try a tiny sip through a straw to reduce air intake. Some say it's bad, some say the opposite. I tend to like using them.

Just be patient and don't push it. Like the previous poster mentioned, I too felt better with each passing day. Good luck!

With such gas issues...I would not recommend using a straw, especially this early on...just saying. :)

Hiccuping and burping really hurt early out but I think somewhere around day 10 it went away. I've not been sick or even felt nauseous since my surgery so I can't comment on that.

You may want to contact your surgeon for this one. You can get extremely dehydrated quickly if you are vomiting a lot. I'm so sorry to hear you are going through this!!!

I never barfed, but I did feel like burping these tiny little burps... I found tapping lightly on my chest helped bring them up and make room for the drink to go down.

I find I am standing up to do most of my drinking. I also sip small and "burp" myself. Slapping my chest. I also just go with the sounds instead of trying to be discreet and lady like... its just me and sis here anyhow blink.gif I have only had one incident with barfing since being home..Thank God!!! I just fanned myself to cool off and then went straight to bed.

I did a little research yesterday and found a 36 bougie make a little smaller stomach than 1/2 inch! That is TINY. And then add that it is swollen on top of that... no wonder the liquids go down slow, never mind the solids! When I first got home from the hospital, my chest sounded like a sucking drain in the sink as the dish Water emptied out! It still gurgles some, but much better now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
