WooHoo! Got back to swimming

Recommended Posts

I recently was able to join a senior wellness center and they have a great lap pool. I hadn't swam in years and was surprised about the effort it took. I especially had problems breathing doing the standard crawl and was swallowing a lot of Water - not cool with the VSG. I was lucky to get in 12 laps at most.

I also had really crappy goggles so I decided to go to a sports store to pick up a decent pair. There it was, the answer to my dilemma - a snorkel! I picked up a really nice pair of goggles, a snorkel, a pair of small kick fins and some hand fins. I couldn't believe the difference! I was able to swim for a full hour without stopping. I could breast stroke and crawl to my hearts desire and breath whenever I wanted. I must of done 80 laps or more!

I filled in my caloric intake and exercise at myfittnesspal.com was running NEGATIVE 311 calories today! My question is can I keep doing this? Expending that MANY more calories than I take in? At least while I am still losing weight. The site claims I should be taking in 1640 calories with the exercise goals I set. I ate 900 today and supposedly spent 1211 swimming.

Man am I sore too!

JEALOUS!!!! I'm dying to get back in the pool. I am waiting for my knife wound to heal, i feel like I got grounded or put in the penalty box or etc.

About the calories -- your body will let you know if you're overdoing it. Look out for a lower immune system, more frequent colds, etc. Usually when I was really overtraining, back in my Ironwoman days, I'd get hit by some hideous, gluey disease state and realize it was time to throttle back.

According to my doctor during the first 6-12 months, while losing weight is still really easy, you want to ingest a little bit of calories, and burn as many as you can. That's the same problem I had. Once your body gets to the stable point and you remain at your weight then it'll taper off and to maintain the desired weight.

I too am confused about the whole calorie out v in thing. I exercise pretty much every day, from walking my dog 2 1/2 miles to going to the boxing gym twice weekly and bits and bobs in between. I am 'supposed to eat around 1300 cals a day and I get in around the 900 mark. So my in v out is in negative equity but I am an incredibly slow loser!!??

In my case it might be that my body is just not playing fair...lol!!

Congrats on the swimming Rootman, it is a brilliant exercise to do as it covers all areas of the body! Glad you have found something that you enjoy!

Rootman, that sounds great! Swimming is a great choice, my thought was always that you can work out like a crazy person in the Water and NEVER SWEAT!!! That was always a plus for me. But 80 laps second time out is a huge, huge workout, even with the aids of the fins. Maybe work up to that.

Crosswind, what did I miss? Knive wound? You were swimming since surgery, did something else happen?

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
