I didn't think it would ever happen for me...

Hey all. I had my VSG yesterday and I still can't believe I did it. I was supposed to have it done March 22 but Dr. cancelled due to a small weight gain. I was so paranoid about having that happen again that I was uber-rigid with my presurgery diet. I was supposed to stay overnight 2 nights until tomorrow, but I was doing well enough that he sent me home today. Glad for it since I could hardly sleep at the hospital. I have 5 abdominal stab wounds from the laparoscope and a JP drain. He didn't say anything about not returning to work (I'm a nurse in the same recovery room I was just in), he only said not to drive while taking the lortab elixir. I want to go back to work on monday. I'm feeling kinda sore, and I have been sipping my liquids. It still hasn't kicked in yet that I will be losing weight now. I feel like I will believe it when I see it. Anybody else felt like this before? I'm still kinda fuzzy headed. ;)

Congratulations. I have to say though, is that a little weird to be the patient in the same surgery room you have worked in before? Maybe its more of a comfort than those of who don't work in the medical field.

Keep everyone posted with your journey!

LOL yeah, I was kinda freaked at first because I was nervous about what they would think of me having the surgery. But the day before I was like " eff that". I'm gonna git er done and be healthy and happy. I was reassured because I know they took good care of me and I felt safe. :)

Congratulations! I remember your post when you were cancelled. Don't rush back to work. Give your body a chance to heal and you a chance to adjust to the new way of eating. My doctor said it best...."it's like hitting the control, alt, delete button on your body" Keep sipping and walking!!! So happy for you!:D

I think you will find all the info you want all over this board- there are tons of posts about doctors and about the whole procedure. If you have a specific question your best bet would be to post it as this may get lost in this thread wince it is about a specific person's surgery. For example there is a place where doctors are discussed- you can ask about doctors in your area.

Good luck to you!

Glad to hear it all worked out! Congrats on the pre-surgery weight loss and on being sleeved. :)

If you are a nurse, that is some hard work -- I think you might be pushing it to go back so fast. JMO.

Hooray for you! So glad you overcame the setback of being cancelled/postponed. Good luck with your recovery. Seems like you shouldn't be afraid to take a few extra days off if you find you need them, though. Be good to yourself!

I am so glad everything worked out for you. I too, remember you being freaked out about working at the same place you were having the surgery. Glad everything went well and you are home doing good.

Keep us posted on your recovery!

Kelly

Congrats Heather. Glad you finally got done. I look forward to hearing how everything goes as I am only two weeks away from getting mine now since I was also canceled once.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
