Monday April 4th was my big day. I have had nothing but issues ever since. I was in the hospital from the 4th to the 9th total of 6 days thought I'd be in there for two nights not so much...the hardest part was watching all the other sleeve-rs that came in and left while I sat there wondering what was wrong with me. They tried to take out my IV on Tuesday afternoon or evening and had to put it back in a couple days later because I was dehydrated. Between the gas, nausea and horrible heartburn/acid reflux I could not get anything down and if I did I got nauseated instantly sometimes vomiting which is no fun. Oh how I feel like I've been thru the ringer and back a few times. I was really hoping this would have went differently ~ but what's done is done and I have to try to figure out how to move on and get better. I am still dealing with the heartburn/acid reflux the gas has quit for the most part I do still get some nausea every-once in awhile mostly when I try to take any of the meds they sent me home with. Today I had to go to an Infusion Center and be hooked back up to an IV because I was once again dehydrated spent about 5 hours there. I find it very difficult to drink/sip 64oz of liquids a day when I have such bad heartburn. I really could use some input from anyone that's dealt with this.

My main issues right now are:

1. Getting in 64 oz of liquids to stay hydrated

2. Haven't had hardly anything to eat in the last 9 days due to all of the above drama

Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated as to how I can possibly turn this around.

Side Note: I am going in tomorrow for another upper GI and then to see my surgeon.

Oh, you poor thing! I am sorry you are having such a hard time. I can empathize with the Fluid problem--it was a couple weeks until I could even get in 40 oz of fluids each day. All I can tell you is to take tiny sips constantly and they will amount to enough to keep you from needing an IV. As far as acid, I came home on a PPI to control stomach acid. What are you taking for your acid? If it is not working, ask your doctor to change it. I hope you feel better soon.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
