Statistics of weight regain without WLS?

Recommended Posts

When I went to my surgeon's seminar, I remember him saying something like 99% of people above a certain BMI would regain their weight if they lost it without surgery.

Has anyone seen a statistic like this before? The reason I ask is that I am doing a persuasive speech for a class tomorrow night about why WLS is not the easy way out and would love to use this statistic if I can find a proper source for it.

Track down Tiffykins, she knows everything....stats etc. If she does NOT know, she can find out. She is who we all go to if we have a question!!! Good luck, and congrats, you're doing great!

When searching for weight regain on the internet, several articles reference Grodstein, et al 1996 -

Ninety-five percent of all dieters will regain their lost weight in 1-5 years (Grodstein, et al., 1996) http://www.nawls.com/public/102.cfm?sd=2.

However, I could not find the actual study on-line without having to pay a fee.

I know this stat is thrown around a lot. I believe it, because I've lived it. But, I have no scientific proof. Good luck ... hopefully you can find a study to reference based on that. Let us know if you do!

Tijuana - I totally DISAGREE - I think 99.9% of all diets fail reguardless of BMI. I've done everything from diet pills, Optifast to WW - to seeing a nutritionist. I've lost and regained anywhere from 15 lbs, 20 lbs all the way to 50 lbs (i lost 50 lbs three different times in my life!!!). Each and every single time I regained it all, some times plus some - obviously! I am certain I screwed up my metabolism with all the yo you dieting....and the pills. Yikes, I was one of the phen phen users. I only did it a short time when the scare happened. I had to spend money to have my heart checked out, luckily I was fine....and I never, ever took another diet pill. It cured me! Anyway......I think you missed that percentage just a little!!! ;)

95% of all diets fail - Google it although here's one link http://www.articlesb...il-2312835.html

That's 95% for any BMI.

I'm not disagreeing, but 95% is just a commonly quoted figure (type it in Google and it auto-completes whereas 99% doesn't). I agree, if I could've stayed at goal then I wouldn't have gone the WLS route. I got to goal twice with WW (about 10 years apart), I've also done Xenical and also got to goal with South Beach.

Diets mess with your head and you end up more food obsessed than before! angry.gif
