Anyone out there over 60?

Recommended Posts

I am 61 -- going to meet the Weight Loss Surgery Group in a seminar tomorrow morning at St. Vincent's in Birmingham, AL --- Drs. Miles & Schmitt.

I have battled weight for many years and want to do something for myself. I am 5'5" and 201 pounds---small bones. I should weigh between 125 -130, so losing 75-80 pounds would be my goal. The gastric sleeve would be my choice. I will be a self-pay. It is really wonderful to see that other persons over 55 have undertaken this journey. You are very encouraging. If the doctors would approve me tomorrow, I would walk into the operating room! Are there any others who have had surgery performed by Dr. Les Miles or Dr. Lee Schmitt in Birmingham?

I guess we are never too old to get healthier! I'm 56 and my VSG surgery is scheduled for 6/1/11.

Glad to see lots of Baby Boomers on VST!

So over 50 sleevers -- how was your post-op recovery?

I'm 9 days out and I cannot believe myself! I am watching my BP, as it's dipping low. I imagine I'll be off my bp meds soon---that was ONE goal of the surgery! I can still tell I was put to sleep---sometimes feel a little fuzzy, but I haven't needed any painkillers, I sleep normally, and I can eat more easily every day. It has been the EASIEST surgery I've ever had. I'm 60 and am thrilled with the procedure so far. I had one rough day---the day after surgery, but once the bp was regulated and the headache went away, I was good to go home.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
