curry2dive 1 Posted April 11, 2011 Started my 3 day clear liquid diet yesterday - do I need to be concerned about how much Protein I get in? Instructions from Dr. Kelly just say broth, sf Jello, diluted juice - no mention of protein requirements. Thought I was ready for this, but now feeling overwhelmed. Afraid I will get to TJ and he will find some reason not to do the VSG. Will be driving to San Diego on Tuesday with lots of bathroom stops!
irishprincess966 0 Posted April 11, 2011 My doctor didnt give me any preop Protein "requirements" but suggested drinking 1-2 of the nectar Protein suppliments. The more protein the better your body will be able to heal afterwards. I only have to do 1 day of the liquid diet. I feel bad for anyone who has to do any longer than that because it cant be easy. Good luck and drive carefully!
curry2dive 1 Posted April 11, 2011 I have some nectar samples, Isopure and Protein Shots I will try today. Felt a little sick to my stomach yesterday and just the smell of broth really made me ill....all this before surgery!!! I drank so much cold liquid that I was freezing and had to go to bed with my heating pad. Thanks for your reply!

curry2dive 1 Posted April 12, 2011 Thank you for posting this morning - I really needed to read encouraging words this morning! Very nervous and emotional about this journey, but I am ready to get this done! I will be sure to tell Dr. Kelly and Trish hello for you. 1 cherrokkee reacted to this
luvthe8r 4 Posted April 12, 2011 I drank a New Whey Protein shot every day. They didn't taste very good, but if you can get it down it is like 42 grams of protein and I swear it was the reason I was up and around so quickly. I had to go back to work 5 days after surgery and I think the protein was my saving grace! I now actually like a couple of them.
BeachWithMyBabies 24 Posted April 12, 2011 I just started my clear liquid pre-op diet too. I had similar questions and called my nurse. She DID NOT want me eating any Protein Shakes - no Protein. Only thing she wanted me to eat was Jello (sugar is okay), gatorade, broth, and diluted apple or grape juice. Protein makes stool and the reason you are on this diet is to clear out your bowels so if they accidentally nick anything, you won't have stool in your body. She told me if I ate protein, my surgery would be canceled and rescheduled. Just FYI. But really, call your doctor's office.

luvthe8r 4 Posted April 13, 2011 I totally misread this thread. I thought it was a general question about getting Protein in. I didn't realize it was a pre-op question. I apologize for giving bad advice!!!
