Questions about scheduling surgery

Recommended Posts

HI!

I am going this week to apply for my passport and am hoping to get sleeve surgery scheduled either before June 4 or after June 14. (Hubby is going on a group camping trip with my 4 yr old son on June 9-13 and my 2 yr old son will be home with me). I am paying cash for my surgery but I won't have the money until May 15. I was wondering how soon can you get your surgery scheduled after putting down your deposit. How many days is the preop diet? Where do you get the preop diet from? Guess I'm wondering if I have enough time for preop after paying deposit if I want the surgery beginning of June.

Obviously, the sooner the better since I can't wait to have it done. lol I don't want to go down there in the middle of a blazing hot summer...not that it would be much different for me here in AZ. But here, I know my a/c works.

Where are you planning on getting your surgery? It might be best to ask the coordinator for that facility the dates they are booking for. Maybe you might want to pencil in those two dates if they are available with them.

I sent in my deposit after I booked with Dr. Aceves. I can not remember how much time I had to pay the deposit after I booked the surgery. Might also ask the coordinator at the facility when they want the $500 deposit.

Like Lily, I booked the surgery first and then put down the deposit. I used a credit card for the deposit and an electronic bank transfer for the remainder. I did not have to do a pre-op diet as my BMI was less than 40. Check with the office of the surgeon you decide upon and they will tell you if a pre-op diet is required, how long you have ot be on it, and what it should consist of. Good Luck!

Hi foxbins! Both are excellent answers. I would also add that most companies here in Mexico offer paypal as an alternative. This is a great option that give peace of mind to the patient, especially when having the surgery done abroad.

You should definitely check in with your surgeon by phone/email, so that you get specific details about pre-diet. The "over 40 BMI rule" is not a golden rule for all physicians. Most physicians treat it depending on each patient.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
