58 years too old for VSG?

Recommended Posts

I'm just starting to research VSG.

I'm 5'7" about 215 pounds and I'm 58 years old.

I want to be thin. I've lost weight a million times :) but never can keep it off. It just gets harder the older I get.

Am I too old to consider this surgery?

I'm 56 and don't consider it old at all. My reasoning for going this route is that if I live as long as my grandmother did (93), then I have 37 more years of living (more or less). I don't know if I could do it if I don't have this surgery, and I don't want to live for the next 20-40 years if they're like the ones I've already lived through -- fat, sick and tired. So, for me, I'm going for it on April 26th and can hardly wait.

I am 10 1/2 weeks out from surgery and I turned 55 about 5 weeks ago. I have too much life ahead of me to continue the weight battle. The surgery works! I would never have lost this much weight on my own, or kept it off if I did. Go for it!

Hi I am 58 but I have been sleeved for 2 years at the end of this month.

I wish I had done it years ago. You are not to old. Get sleeved. You'll never regret it!

I just turned 57 last month and I am having the surgery next Tuesday! You are definitely not too old! Do your research on the surgery...this website is a great place to learn from the folks who have already made the jump. I considered it for over a year before I made the commitment and now I don't know what took me so long!

I am a "young" 63 years old with no health problems other than sleep apnea. I am having it done next month. I can't wait to be considered of "normal" size. I don't need to be a model or thin - I just want to be within the normal range. Baby boomers have a lot of living yet to do!!!! :)

I am 56 and 5'8". I was 232 the day of surgery less than 3 months ago and I'm 194 today. No complications and no problems healing. I also had a big hiatal hernia repaired at the same time. I say go for it!

Hi there,

I asked a similar question a couple of weeks ago, as I'm 61. All of the responses were positive. My surgeon told me last week that he has performed the sleeve surgery on a 78-year-old and that age alone needn't factor into the decision.

Good luck to you!.

Absolutely not. You will eliminate co morbid conditions, be healthy, lighter, look and feel younger and add years and quality to your life. Go for it.

NO!!!!! You're not too old,it's funny I posted this same question probably 14 months ago. I'm 53(soon to be 54) and am a year out. I had high bp and rhuematoid arthritis and I did fine, my 61 yr old cousin had it 3 weeks ago and is 21 lbs down and doing great other than a little soreness in the incison where they removed the stomach. The quality of life is better so why not be a healthier, slimmer 58?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
