LissaD 1 Posted April 9, 2011 Hey, Just wondering if an EGD is a standard must have before getting the sleeve. Thx
justdance 0 Posted April 9, 2011 It depends on your own health status and ur doctor... I am 28 I am about 130lbs overweight but have no health problems besides being overweight my doc didn't make me get one
iegal 460 Posted April 9, 2011 Hi; I did not have a EGD prior to VSG. But I did have an EKG and an ultrasound to see if I had gallstones and condition/placement of liver & stomache. Agree with justdance - each surgeon and patient is different. Why don't you ask your surgeon why you need one and if it can be optional? Good luck!
samantha209 19 Posted April 9, 2011 I didnt have one...I had an EKG, Chest Xray, Esophagram, and a venous Duplex in addition to the nutritionist and Psych eval and blood work
Chicadee 10 Posted April 9, 2011 While not required by insurance my doctor had me get one. He has all of his bypass patients get one so he decided to require it for all sleeves as well, just to make sure there are no issues.
Rainydayz 27 Posted April 9, 2011 Is that the same as an "Upper GI"? If so my surgeon makes us get one, not the insurance.
justdance 0 Posted April 10, 2011 Upper GI is where u drink the barium, roll around on the table and they xray you while its going down.. egd is where they sedate you and put the camera down your throat

cwalker 12 Posted April 10, 2011 Hey, Just wondering if an EGD is a standard must have before getting the sleeve. Thx It depends on the patient according to my surgeon. My cousin had to have one as she tested positive for H-pylori twice. I didnt have the bacteria so didn have to have it and we used the same surgeon. Threre are some sugeons that may do it as a precaution so there is no suprizes on day of surgery.
Oopsseedaisy 90 Posted April 14, 2011 My surgeon requires an EGD. He performs it himself so he can see the lay of the prior to surgery.
