samantha209 19 Posted April 6, 2011 What would you say is the leading culprit: 1-not adhering to the diet 2-Inexperience/negligence/skill level of the doctor 3-the overall health of the patient 4-just plain old chance, luck of the draw (or lack there of)
Rootman 1,101 Posted April 6, 2011 I would say #4, then #3, then #1, then #2. We all seem to know someone who went in for a routine surgery and came out nearly losing their life or limb. My bro went in for bunion surgery - the same thing my wife and I both had without an issues - and nearly dies due to MRSA bacterial infection. He was in the ICU on IV antibiotics for days before they got it under control, they feared it would effect their heart. Someone I know knew someone who died from complication from wisdom tooth extraction, got infected, threw a clot and bam! Stroked out. It DOES happen, just trust the Lord will protect you, choose a competent Dr and try and get as healthy and strong as you can before you go under the knife. Tiffykins 673 Posted April 6, 2011 I would rate it in this order: 2 1 4 3 My leak was a combination of 3 and 4. My stomach tissue was destroyed by the band. I can't blame my surgeon for trying to repair what the band had done. And, I was my surgeon's first and only leak. Luck of the draw I guess LOL.

sasicas 194 Posted April 24, 2011 Not sure what the leading culprit is but I do know mine was #4. After a 12 day hospital stay we determined that I had a stricture, it was ballooned open, my nausea increased. I had a leak test and swallow study, then began vomiting. After another scope there was a small hole found at the top of my sleeve that will be glued shut this week (drs determined it was not leaking and small enough to allow me to go home and eat normally again). And my sleeve is more of an L shape vs a banana shape. Its just the way my body healed. The doctors also suspect that I have/had more inflammation in my sleeve than most people do. Also found narrowing in my esophagus and delayed emptying. All of which seem to just be random complications. Of course now most surgeons want to revise me to RNY but I am standing strong against that. Just praying things continue to improve instead of getting worse.
