confused on what I should eat

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I had my sleeve surgery on 3/15/11. I've lost 12 pounds since surgery. I received so many different diet packets on what to eat and it all confused me. I think maybe I was eating things I should not have been eating in week two. I was eating blended Soup and baby food in week 1. I thought that was allowed but maybe I misread the material. I also ate some mashed potatoes in week two. I didn't realize those were forbidden until I read over another packet of material. So I eliminated potatoes altogether.

I just started week three yesterday. I have been eating blended Soups, some baby food, and cottage cheese and of course Protein shakes. When can I start eating normal food again?

Also, can anyone tell me when will the pain in my abdomen go away completely? When I wear jeans that button near my incision I feel pain. I also feel as if there are lumps under the incision areas that are sore. Does anyone remember when that goes away?

Welcome to VSG Talk! As you have found there is a lot of opinions on what and when you can eat. It isn't really that hard. Take it easy and stay on liquids for 2 weeks (you're past that), then eat soft foods like applesauce, thin non creamy broth and yogurt and stuff you COULD suck through a straw (you don't have to eat it through a straw just to get an idea of consistency) for another 2 weeks, then start on pureed foods, blend up Soups and soft foods for another 2 weeks. You have to let that tummy heal, it's been through quite an ordeal. After about 6 weeks you can eat ANYTHING you want. The key is to eat the RIGHT foods.

Remember you can only eat a small amount, likely 2 - 4 ounces of food. Since we can eat so LITTLE we have to concentrate on the best stuff, and that is Protein. Always choose Protein over carbs or fat. Eat the protein FIRST then if you have room and want more than carbs, then fat. If you think you are eating too much and exceeding 600-900 calories then measure your foods out an ONLY eat small portions, like 1/2 cup.

The REASON for protein first? It's what's best, you are going to come up short in calories and you body wants the energy it needs from SOMEWHERE, if it doesn't get it from calories then it takes it from fat AND lean muscle mass. We WANT to keep the lean muscle mass and lose the fat, so you have to give the body what it wants in order for it NOT to select muscle mass for energy and that is PROTEIN. Lean meats, chicken, turkey and stuff like that, red meats - which includes pork. You can also get protein supplements like whey shots.

If you are losing weight and have enough energy then you are eating right. If you CAN'T lose weight examine your diet and try to find out if you perhaps taking in too many carbs.

We wish you the best.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
