Advice needed - what is life like 12 days post op?

Recommended Posts

I am in shock- once all my tests were complete I knew they would submit to insurance. I wrote to my surgeon and told him how excited I am and that I have my Protein Drinks all ready so I can start my two weeks liquids at a word from him.

I was blown away when he emailed back yesterday and said "start liquids now".

WTF!!!!!!

Basically due to my wedding photography schedule I either need to have the surgery by April 15th or so to give me two weeks before our 4/30 wedding, or else wait until after our May 6th wedding, giving me three weeks until our May 30th wedding.

If I start liquids tomorrow (obviously I needed to talk to his nurse today to see if he was serious that it could be that soon- she said yes, it is good to have already started the diet so I can get a date asap)- then I could have the surgery on the 18th.

I am wondering what condition I would likely be in at day 12 or so. I know that everyone varies- quite a bit, but I thought if I have you all weigh in on what it was like for you I can get a general idea if I could possible work a wedding on April 30th. My husband and son both shoot too and obviously with my weight and many pain issues they already do the bulk of the work. I am trying to figure ou if me post surgery 12 days out would be about as able ....

Meanwhile of course I am really mourning a little that I don;t even get to have some of the favorite foods I Planned to have before my liquids. Still, things happen for a reason and maybe that is for the best!

I'm only 8 days out, but I feel great! I am still really careful not to bend over at the waist and lift over 30 lbs unless I have to. I have all my energy back and can work several hours on my feet doing labor at garden centers. I do however think a lot of my healing has to do with having a great attitude, it is what you make it!

Congrats on your date, your gonna do awesome!!

Thank you! I guess I will leave the thread here ;-P

Yes, I think since I usually am in huge pain and can hardly move- how could post surgery be very different?

I have always bounced back from surgery pretty quickly so I at least know anesthesia is not usually a problem, etc.

yep I was 12 days out I was also feeling great. Dont get me wrong You will not be able to lift heavy things you will be drinking Protein Drinks and Water etc. so as long as you don't lift anything and keep a drink in your hand you should do fine.. I was walking 1/2 mile on the 12 day after surgery. You will do fine and if you need to rest just listen to your body and rest...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
