working after a morning endoscopy?

Recommended Posts

I just received approval from my insurance co. today; I need to get an endoscopy, blood work and an abdominal ultrasound completed before the pt. coordinator can schedule me for surgery. I'd like to take a week off to recover from the actual surgery, so I am interested in conserving my vacation/sick days - i was wondering if the endoscopy is something I could reasonably do 1st thing in the morning, then go to work the rest of the day? I won't have to drive (a coworker can buzz over and pick me up, it's close to my office). I have a desk job that requires I be creative, but not every second of every day, lol......

Obviously I've never had an endoscopy before :) I get 2 weeks vacation so I could take the day off if needed, but want to save some for later so the "new me" can enjoy a vacation without being exhausted each day of it!

Thanks,

Lori

I just had my endoscopy this past friday. It was 1st thing in the morning and I didn't feel normal (not groggy/drugged) until 8 hours later. I don't think I would have been able to make it to work. I was like you and want conserve my PTO days, but I would take a day off for the procedure.

The endoscopy itself is a breeze, but the meds they gave me had me seriously zoned-out and flat on my back on my sofa for 4-5 hours afterwards. There was no way I could have worked that day.

I know I am in the same boat as you! I don't want to suck it all up for just testing! But my doctor and hospital said absolutely no working for 24hours- and I have a desk job also- but I also work in a 24/7 operation - so I can just trade my days off that week- sorry- I am sure you didn't want to hear that- ( I relate this to when I had a colonoscopy- its better to just go home and sleep and let the meds wear off)...

I just had it done this Monday. You have sedation given to you by anesthesia. I would not trust myself to make any decisions after it. Came home and slept 3 hours.

Yep that was what I was thinking too- that you just have to really get rest afterwards- almost to the point where it just makes you - you cant stay awake.

WELL- unless you get what drug did Micheal Jackson take ? propinal- if they give you that when they put you out- you will wake up alert- like you had a really good nights rest- but usually they don't use that lol-

Find out whether they drug you at endoscopy. Seems to be a popular thing based on the earlier replies - but I've had endoscopy done several times (not in North America) and no one ever used any medication on me. It's rather unnecessary, as this isn't a painful procedure, just a bit uncomfortable (you'll gag for 30 seconds or so). If they don't give you any meds, you'll be a-skippin' on your way to work the second they pull that tube out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
