I dont even know where to begin! Leaning towards Mexico! If you had your surgery in Mexico.....

Who was the doctor who performed your surgery, at what hospital and what was your total out of pocket expence if you dont mind me asking. I will be paying cash and I am probably going to be traveling alone, would love any helpful tips on what, if anything I should take with me(for ex:Meds, shakes), I have done alot of research am just so overwhelmed with all the different options. I think I would like to do the Gastric Plication Surgery, since so many people are going that route after failed lap-band and it doesnt seem as invasive as the gastric sleeve because no part of the stomach is removed. I also dont know if I need to see a local physician...i was just reading about stress tests, etc. and I dont know if that is something taken care of there in Mexico post-op or what. I dont want to die on the operating table! I have no health conditions that I am aware of, good blood pressure, no diabetes, just fat! I am 37 yr old female and I weigh 240 lbs and I am sick of being fat all of my life and i dont care what anyone thinks anymore, people have been sabotaging me all my life and its time for a new start:) I have a 15 month old daughter that I wanna be around long enough to see her into adulthood. It would also be nice if I could keep up with her and not be ashamed to be naked around my husband...

What are your thoughts?

Btw, thank you for your time, I really appreciate it:)

I had my surgery with Dr. Almanza at Jerusalem hospital. I paid 4500 for the sleeve on 3-14-2011. The staff and doc were all wonderful. You stay one days in the hospital then you are moved to the guest house where you spend two days at with around the clock care. I went to Tijuana alone and i was fine coming and going back by myself.

I had my sleeve with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. Surgery was $8750 and I had to find my own flights to and from San Diego. They have a driver pick you up. You stay at a hotel the first night there and the expense is covered by the surgery fee. Spending money you do not need much. I spent $12 US for my awesome meal the night before surgery. And then I bought some cheap Nexium at their pharmacy. Total extra money $100 or there abouts.

Thank you for your reply shybaby:) It was very helpful...so how are you feeling? What are you eating? I have a one yr old and I was wondering, from your experience, how long do you think I will need help around the house and with her (lifting, feeding, bathing)before I can do it alone? Trying to make arrangements from now.

BTW, congratulations! I am so jealous!

I can tell you from experience you're not going to want to lift anything for at least a week. Then after you start to heal you can increase the things you do. But I didn't do much around the house when I returned home because you still have stitches in and if you do something to strenuous you do feel the pain. So you want to take it easy that first week at least. And as far as lifting your daughter I wouldn't do that for 2 weeks. But you'll still be able to feed and change her when you get home you'll just need assistance with lifting. The pain is very minimal after two days of course right out of surgery you're in pain and all you want is pain meds and to sleep through it. Upon your departure you'll be fine I felt like my normal self I even did some yard work four days post op. I'm eating Soups only that's all I can stand. I would get someone to help me around the house for a week for sure.

I had my VSG surgery on 03/18/11 by Dr. Almanza in Tijuana, Mexico. My consultant was Nina. Her website is bariatricinmexico.com. The best thing about using her is that she sticks with you every step of the way. My cousin and I flew into San Diego and was picked up by the hospital van the next morning. It took about 20 minutes to get from the airport to the hospital. We had our bloodwork done, got ekg's, met with the doctor to discuss any questions and then had surgery. We stayed one night at the hospital with around the clock care. We spent the next night at the recovery house with around the clock care. The next day we went back to San Diego because we had early morning flights the following morning. Everything went very well. My high weight was 196. CW183. I feel great. My coordinator Nina met us at the hospital on the morning of surgery. She took us to the recovery house as well. There were two other patients that had surgery on the same day as my cousin and I. There coordinators never even showed up. Nina has called to check on us a couple of times since we returned back to the states. I just talked to her two days ago because I had some questions about exercise. Everyone at Dr.Almanza's was great. They were really friendly and knew what they were doing. The "hospital" would actually be considered a surgical center here in the states. But it is clean and they have everything that you need. None of the posts that I read before I had surgery told me that I would feel like crap after surgery. Be prepared to feel sore and nauseated for the first 24-48 hours. By day three you will be fine. At least that was my experience. My cousin who has a higher BMI than me has lost over 25 lbs and we had surgery the same day! I am a little upset at how slow my weight loss is but if your bmi is low it's gonna come off a little slower. I wish you luck and success in your weight loss journey. Keep me posted on what you decide to do.

I had my surgery done by Dr. Almanza at Jerusalem Hospital also. I had no complaints and the staff was wonderful. Dr. Betancourt and Dr. Almanza were both very informative and thorough with all of my care and instructions. Don't be afraid to ask any and all questions because they will spend the time talking with you about everything! Also I had to come home to a 12lb two month old son WITH NO HELP! I pretty much did everything as far as he was concerned (lifting, bathing, changing etc....). The only thing I didn't do was lift him while he was in his carrier or tote it for the first week or so. I had my oldest son put it in the vehicle and take it out for me. But sometimes I didn't have any help at all so I had to just use my head and think before I did something to strenuous. Usually, I could do anything I needed to I just had to make extra trips to make my load lighter (take the baby bag, then take the car seat, then take the baby to the car.....where as any other time we grab all of these things at once). It has been aggravating, but you will learn ways to do what you gotta do to make it work :-) Good luck with your surgery! :-)

I just got back yesterday from my sleeve in Tijuana with Dr. Almanza and also had a good experience. I'm posting Nina's website here. I wouldn't use anyone else!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
