HOW LONG DID YOU WAIT????

Recommended Posts

JUST WONDERING HOW LONG DID OTHERS WAIT BEFORE BEGINNING TO DO CARDIO AND STRENGTH TRAINING??? MY POST OP INSTRUCTIONS SAY TO WAIT 6 WEEKS. I AM SO AFRAID OF NOT BEING ABLE TO LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT EXERCISING. MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT WORKING OUT AND WALKING HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING FOR "ME", ONLY CARDIO AND STRENGTH TRAINING SUCH AS (TAEBO) AND TOTAL GYM WORKOUTS.

Make sure to follow Dr's instructions!! You have had abdominal surgery and you don't want to put any undue stress on your core. My doc said only walking for the first several weeks. Weights / pilates, etc after 6 to 8 weeks. You can lose weight without exercise. Of course, you want to exercise to keep your body healthy. just don't jump the gun and start too soon. You are still recovering from major surgery.

My doctor told me I could start walking within a week, but no lifting or straining for 4 weeks. I started really exercising at one month post op.

Thanks a lot everybody :-) It seems like most of you waited at least one month, which isn't much longer. Guess I will start to do a Walk Away the Pounds dvd or something along those lines until that time.

Walked a lot immediately, weight training after 6 weeks and I lost a lot of muscle mass in that time.

That is what I was thinking that some of us would lose a lot of muscle mass without the strength and toning workouts. You are doing soooooo GREAT though!! :-)

My surgeon gave me the ok to get on the elliptical at 3 weeks out but no heavy lifting until 6 weeks or so. Of course she also says walk, walk, walk! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
