One Month Since Surgery

Today marks a month since surgery and I feel pretty great. Of course, it's hard not to feel great when you drop 34 pounds in 31 days. I know the first month loss is special and rarely repeated so I am just going to enjoy that number for a few days.:)

I will say that it is now apparent that I am one of the blessed (cursed?) people who can eat pretty much anything without negative physical effects or complications. I haven't done anything crazy but I am going journal shopping tomorrow and will begin seriously policing what I am eating and what excercise I am getting. I gave myself a month to adjust to surgery but I want to work on developing some lifelong habits so I don't have to ever deal with this again. I want to relax and enjoy life, but I hope I stay ever-vigilant for the carelessness and poor practices that led to the weight gain. I am really scared of backsliding now or one day in the future.

At the one month mark, I constantly find myself comparing what I eat now to what I could and often did eat before surgery. The sheer amount of food I used to put away in one sitting much less an entire day now fascinates me.

Anyone else having these moments?

WOW what a great weight loss!! I'm a month out too, but have only lost 6kgs (which is just over 13lbs) but I lost a fair bit before surgery so am actually about halfway to my goal.

It fascinates me as well to see how things have changed - the volume of food I could pack in before surgery was pretty piggy really (well I didn't get overweight by having a delicate appetite!) and I'm so happy to be full on a small portion. One egg and I'm stuffed full...... from someone who could eat a 3 egg cheese and vege omelette and be lining up for toast as well!

I've never been a fast loser, but at least it seems achievable now without feeling deprived and "on a diet" - roll on (or off!) the next 20kgs

I went to a one-month post op nutrition class this week. (sleeved 3/3/11). The dietition said the goal is to eat 15 oz of food A DAY! wow, that is a drastic change from the crazy, rediculous amount of food I consumed (inhaled) on a daily basis pre surgery. The voice in my head today says, as I look at my quarter cup of "whatever," stop when you're full, and you don't have to finish your plate. Seems to be working. One day at a time.

I've heard and seen so many stories about people gaining all their weight, plus more, back in spite of having WLS. I don't judge them, I too am a food addict. Today, I am blessed with many tools to use to deal with life non food related.

Not quite at a month, but already down 25 pounds. It is soooo amazing to see and feel how loose my clothes are already fitting. I do hope that I can keep my momentum going. I have shaken up my routine. I climb the stairs at work during my breaks. It seems to be counter acting and confusing my body. I walk 45 minutes a day and resistance training every other day. So we will see how this works with the weight loss. Everyone is doing an amazing job!!!!:D

I'm just over two weeks out and had one scrambled egg with a bit of milk.... totally stuffed!

Love it.... I feel no hunger (though I do sometimes miss the taste of things.)

My knees already feel better, my back has been feeling better. My energy level has been great.

Hoping this all continues.

I've been trying to be very aware now when I eat of whether I am hungry or not and whether or not I CAN recognize signals that I am full. I recognize when I am stuffed and miserable but full is a tougher feeling to get in touch with now....before surgery. I am a bit afraid that I won't know the difference after surgery so I plan to document every bite I eat too to make sure it doesn't get out of control. Good luck everyone and keep posting about your progress as it keeps those us on the path motivated!

You will know when you have had enough and when you have OVER EATEN. My surgeon explained to me that when you have over eaten that one last bite will come back up. and I measure everything so that I DO NOT OVER EAT. I barely can eat over 2 1/2 ounces. You will do just fine.:D

Although my appetite is much less than before, I still do get hungry. Last night dinner was running late, I was starving, went home and made a salad. Thought, "this looks like a giant salad to me now", but it was about 1/6th the size of the old salad bowl, I dug in and couldn't finish it. Its a miracle really. When i go out to eat, and see what everyone is eating, it all looks GIANT to me. I can think "thats how I used to eat" but my brain has made some kind of shift, I remember grabbing and eating three donuts, but now, if they were sitting in front of me, If I was even willing to "go there", I could have maybe one bite and gladly call it quits. I sure hope I can keep this up well into the future... I know this is the "honeymoon", but if I can even keep 50% of this body/mindset, I have hope I can lose and keep the weight off.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
