Was anyone just super, incredibly nervous from the very beginning? I'm sure everyone experienced nerves at one time or another, but I feel so nervous tonight that I feel weak. Oh! And I just attended the Kaiser orientation, so it's not like I"m even committed! Can't figure out why I feel scared sick. I've had gall bladder surgery and it wasn't so awful, so I'm not sure what's stopping me. If you felt this way, please share. If you went ahead with the surgery, what was the turning point that changed your mind to go through with it? One more thing...do they give you something to relax on the day of the surgery? : )

I was very scared at first when considering having the sleeve (I was a revision from the lapband). I had no idea what it was until my revision doctor told me about it. I thought ~ What? They are going to cut out 85% of my stomach? That's crazy! Then I started researching more. I found this supportive forum and saw how happy sleevers are. They are successful as well. I knew that I didn't want to live my life morbidly obese anymore. I was tired of not having clothes that fit and feeling horrible about myself. I had tried every diet, excersized like crazy, and had the lapband. They all failed. I just knew the sleeve was the answer for me. It has turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. You do have to do your part, but the sleeve makes it possible. I could have never had this success or happiness with it. I LOVE my sleeve!

I am not sure if they can give you something the day of surgery. You will have to ask your doctor. They give you some good stuff right before you go into surgery!

I don't know anyone who wasn't scared. I was able to calm myself by realizing my 3 main fears. 1) I would die in surgery, 2) I would have some sort of serious complication causing extreme burden on me and my family, and 3) I would fail at another weight loss attempt. After so much research I realized that my #1 and #2 fears were not really rational. The likely hood of those things happening were SOOOOOO slim to none, while the likely hood of developing a life threatening disease from the obesity was almost 100% likely. After voiding out those concerns I was able to get through surgery without panic. And yes, they will let you have meds for anxiety prior to surgery and the day of surgery. My 3rd fear I am still working on every day and it is one that will probably stick with me for awhile through this process, but that's ok because it is part of the journey. Good luck to you.

Yes, I was very nervous up until the main event! Which I struggled trying to figure out why. After all, I have had 2 c-sections, hysterectomy, apendectomy (sp?), Spinal surgery, and 2 other laparoscopy's. But with being 5'5, 251 lbs, with sleep apnea, fatty liver, newly diagnosed with diabetes and high cholesterol, I had to do something. Not to mention all your reasons as well.

Although, I'm only 14 days out...I am glad I did it. I think with all the past diet failures, it's hard to have faith that this will help. But it can! Just look on these forums and see all the success stories. Granted, it is only a tool. You do have to make a life-long commitment to change your eating and exercise habits. That's by far harder than the surgery itself.

The 1st week is no walk in the park, but over all, the recovery could be a whole lot worse. Just do your research and you will be able to make the decision if it's the right thing for you. Good luck in your decision. :)

I think the reason this surgery makes us so nervous, aside from the obvious reasons, is that we are looking at making a life changing decision. We have come to a cross roads of letting go of food and fat and unveiling the inner person we all have hiding in us. It is a contradiction to the subconscious mind that has protected us so long and justified our eating weight gain. It is that very same subconscious that we hear all of those bargaining thoughts from as we travel down the road of this journey,,,things like Maybe I don't need surgery, I will just diet one more time, or I am not really that fat, ect..................

AMEN!!!!! I have been feeling a little anxious about my surgery...which isn't until June...but THIS RIGHT HERE (well above ;) is why!!!! I had a really crappy day yesterday and went through a drive-thru yesterday - like I do when I'm upset....and driving I realized "I won't be able to do this soon!" and then after I had that moment of sadness - I realized this is EXACTLY why I want the sleeve! I've got to change! Thanks for this post.....

The really great thing about the sleeve is it has freed me from the control of food. I have had a really bad week and not once did I turn to food for comfort. It was the farthest thing from my mind, heck I even skipped dinner a couple nights, (ya that kind of bad).

Don't get too sad about food, you will eat pretty much anything you want again, just not in the quantity you do now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
