Sodas or Champagne

Recommended Posts

Are cokes or champagne off of the list of things we can drink after being banded? I read somewhere that the bubbles from the carbonation will stretch out your pouch. Anyone still drinking these?

My surgeon said the biggest reason to avoid carbonation is that the bubbles are "uncomfortable", but he knows I love champagne and told me to take tiny sips if I chose to drink it. I have not yet.

Not that its an everyday thing, but I still drink champagne occasionally, much as I did before. The bubbles dont cause me discomfort.

I dont drink softdrinks ever anyway. Maybe a diet coke two or three times a year.

Chances are you surgeon's dietary plan will indicate whether or not you can have carbonation. Some allow it, some do not, and some allow it in moderation. It's not "allowed" on my plan, but I was happy to give it up. At first I really craved the carbonation... not Diet Coke persay, but just the feeling of carbonation doing down my throat. That lasted about a month.

My surgeon forbids carbonated drinks and I don't crave them so it's a rule I can live with. I don't want to risk any damage to the band.

My doc said NO CARBONATION of any kind because it streches the pouch. Sounds like some people do fine with it. I love the bubbly too, mimosas yum. Will miss that 4 sure:mad: But i wouldnt want to stretch my tummy after all this $$ and effort !!

Same here. I'll miss my ginger ale I'm sure, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm trying so hard to not mess around and stretch my tummy either.

hello:-)

I dont drink sodas or carbonated drinks.

But I had a glass of Champaigne three weeks after surgery and nothing happend.

But since then I havent had anything carbonated so I dont know. Probably one glass once a month wont hurt, but I dont drink Champaigne too often. Still although it has smaller bubbles it has bubbles,so its up to you or your surgeon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
